After two "short" seasons of six and four episodes each, the raunchy HBO football sitcom 1st and Ten offers a full complement of 13 half-hour installments as the series enters season four. This year, the series' subtitle is "Going for Broke," indicating not only the game plan of the California Bulls, but also their perilous financial status. As ever, the three main characters are Delta Burke as voluptuous team owner Diane Barrow, Reid Sheltonas profanity-spewing coach Ernie Denardo, and O.J. Simpson (still a celebrity by accomplishment rather than notoriety during this period) as former quarterback T.D. Parker, now the team's general manager. Now forced to follow the orders of General Stockwell (Robert Vaughn) if they hope to receive pardons, the A-Team is dispatched behind the Iron Curtain to rescue defecting chemical-warfare scientist Dr. Strasser (Bo Brudin). To cover their tracks, the Team organizes a football game in East Germany, utilizing the talents of several professional players--including T.J. Bryant (Joe Namath), a longtime enemy of B.A. (Mr. T.). Unfortunately, the plan hits a snag when Strasser suddenly refuses to defect...but why? No relation to the similarly titled John Ford film, My Darlin' Clementine originated as a 47-minute TV special. Shelley Duvall (who also produced) plays the title character, the daughter of a miner (forty-niner) whose shoes are number nine. Ed Asner costars as Clementine's dad, while David Dukes is the moonstruck young man who loses Clementine to the briny deep. The tragic elements of the ballad (which of course was meant to be a spoof even back in the 19th century) are tempered by in-the-know comedy vignettes. My Darlin' Clementine was first telecast on the Showtime Cable service as part of the American Tall Tales and Legends anthology. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this madcap comedy, Demi Moore plays Cassandra and John Cusack is Hoops McCann, two people who eventually fall in love and help each other out. Hoops is a cartoonist working on a teen love story that he hopes will get him accepted into art school. Cassandra is a troubled young woman about to lose her home to a money-hungry developer. Characters with names like Squid Calamari, Clay Stork, or Ack Ack Raymond are involved in the unfolding romance and figure in several slapstick routines. Several cartoon sequences are inserted throughout this comedy to comment on the story. This was director Savage Steve Holland's second feature-length film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Leonard Maltin wasn't alone when he noticed similarities between Goonies and the 1934 Our Gang comedy Mama's Little Pirate. Adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, the film follows a group of misfit kids (including such second-generation Hollywoodites as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) as they search for buried treasure in a subterranean cavern. Here they cross the path of lady criminal Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her outlaw brood. Fortunately, the kids manage to befriend Fratelli's hideously deformed (but soft-hearted) son (John Matuszak), who comes to their rescue. The Spielberg influence is most pronounced in the film's prologue and epilogue, when the viewer is advised that the film's real villains are a group of "Evil Land Developers." The musical score makes excellent use of Max Steiner's main theme from The Adventures of Don Juan, not to mention contributions by the likes of Richard Marx and Cyndi Lauper. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Having acquired ownership of the California Bulls pro football team in a divorce settlement (her husband had run off with a lineman!), curvaceous Diane Barrow (Delta Burke) takes charge of the franchise -- and raises the temperatures of all the players in the process -- in the first season of the raunchy HBO sitcom 1st & Ten. Keeping the Bulls in line (and out of reach of the delectable Diane) is dyspeptic coach Ernie Denardo (Reid Shelton). The series' first 13 episodes deftly combine comedy, drama, dirty words, female mammaries, grungy locker-room conferences, tete-a-tetes with questionable-looking characters (most of them friends of Diane's mob-connected nephew) and down-and-dirty gridiron scenes. Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke) informs the Dukes that they've all won big prizes at the Capitol City Department Store. Actually, the "prizes" consist of stolen goods with which Boss intends to frame the Dukes in order to divert the attention of State investigators from his own misdeeds. In a society in which major league sporting events have replaced Sunday worship as the religion of choice, North Dallas Forty appears like a desecration at the altar. In this film, directed by Ted Kotcheff (The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz), the National Football League is revealed to be more about the money than the game. Nick Nolte is North Dallas Bulls pass-catcher Phillip Elliott, whose cynicism and independent spirit is looked upon as troublesome by team coaches Johnson (Charles Durning) and Strothers (G.D. Spradlin) and team owner Conrad Hunter (Steve Forrest). Elliot, at the end of his career and wise to the way players are bought and sold like cattle, goes through the games pumped up on painkillers conveniently provided by the management. His teammates include savvy quarterback Maxwell (Mac Davis) and lunk-headed defensive lineman Jo Bob Priddy (Bo Svenson), who deal with the impersonality and back-biting of the game through off-field diversions. When the Bulls management benches Elliot after manipulating him to help train a fellow teammate, Elliot has to decide whether there is more to life than the game that he loves. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
