Arrested and tortured by the Brazilian military dictatorship for his role in supporting the local guerillas in a dangerous uprising, a tormented friar proves unable to shake move beyond his horrific past even after he is deported to France. The era is the 1960s, and military dictatorship in Brazil has exerted their brutal brand of power over the entire country. Desperate to help lift the dark cloud that has fallen over their downtrodden people, Friar Tito and the other members of the Dominical order secretly begin supporting a group of guerillas who are willing to lay down their lives in the name of freedom. Unbeknownst to the monks however, the secret service has caught wind of their scheme and has the order on around the clock surveillance. Later, after the monks are arrested, tortured, and interrogated, the powers that be use them as bait in a plot to ambush and assassinate the guerilla leader.
