If you're an avid television viewer, chances are good that you recalled actor Eddie Steeples' face when My Name Is Earl debuted on NBC back in 2005. If so, that's likely because Steeples' role as the dancing office supply guy in the popular "Rubberband Man" OfficeMax commercial nearly took the Emmy for best television advertisement just one year prior. A veteran of the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre who later moved to New York City and aligned himself with avant-garde hip-hop outfit No Surrender, Steeples appeared in a number of experimental films by director Kevin Ford before breaking into the mainstream with a role in Torque. Though he would turn up in My Name Is Earl as Crab Shack employee Darnell (and husband of Earl's ex-wife, Joy) the very next year, Steeples' independent spirit was still very much alive, as evidenced by his involvement in such edgy indie flicks as The Lost and Wristcutters: A Love Story in 2006. An additional role in award-winning drama Akeelah and the Bee helped to prove that Steeples was capable of low-key drama as well, though he would continue displaying his loyalty to old friends by appearing in Roman (which was lensed by Ford), The Lost director Chris Sivertson's I Know Who Killed Me, and opposite Roman co-star Angela Bettis in the Ford-helmed comedy When Is Tomorrow in 2007. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
My Name is Earl - Season 3 finds everyone's favorite dimwitted white-trash loser, Earl Hickey (Jason Lee), continuing his hilarious quest to make up for a lengthy list of detestable deeds and thereby become a better person. Earl's life has been full of poor choices and mistakes, but after winning a lottery jackpot he has an epiphany and vows to change his ways. This season, however, Earl finds himself back in prison. A young girl learns to believe in herself and value her intelligence in this critically-acclaimed, family-friendly drama. Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is an 11-year-old being raised by her mother, Tanya (Angela Bassett), who was left on her own after the death of her husband. While Akeelah is a very bright girl, she's hardly a star student and seems afraid of acting like a bookworm around her friends and classmates. However, Akeelah's teacher sees genuine potential in her student and encourages her to enter the school's spelling bee, convinced Akeelah has the brains and the talent to win. Akeelah applies herself and emerges victorious in the local competition, but discovers the going gets tougher when she goes to a statewide bee, studying for the regionals under the aegis of strict English teacher Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), who consents to act as her coach A college professor who was a spelling-bee champ as a child, Larabee is a stubborn taskmaster who questions Akeelah's ability and commitment, but in time he develops a respect for his pupil and helps her prove her talent as she climbs the ladder to the National Spelling Bee. Meanwhile, Tanya feels intimidated when she finds the contests are dominated by children from wealthy families and privileged backgrounds, and argues that the competition may not be in Akeelah's best interest, believing instead that homework should be the one and only priority in Akeelah's life. It soon becomes apparent that if Akeelah has any intention of entering the national spelling bee championships in Washington, D.C., she will not do so with Tanya's permission or blessing. This marks the first onscreen reunion of Bassett and Fishburne since their Academy Award-nommed performances as Ike Turner and Tina Turner in Brian Gibson's 1993 biopic, What's Love Got to Do with It.
