A handful of teenagers find the life they've known is slipping away from them in this independent coming-of-age drama. Nineteen-year-old Ritchie Wheeler (Shiloh Fernandez) is the manager of a roller rink in a small town in East Texas. Ritchie's job gives him a chance to hang out with his friends and get paid for it, but fewer kids are interested in roller skating, and Ritchie's life increasingly feels like an extension of high school as he parties his evenings away without moving forward. Ritchie's kid sister, Mary (Haley Ramm), and his girlfriend, Michelle (Ashley Greene), both think its time he tried to make something of himself, but Ritchie isn't sure which way to go, even as he sees a disturbing reflection of himself in Brent (Heath Freeman), Michelle's older brother. Brent left town for a promising career in motorcycle racing until an accident ended his career and now he's back, drinking beer with his sister's friends and picking up high school girls. As the roller rink is poised to close and divorce tears apart both Ritchie's and Michelle's families, they find themselves leaving childhood behind while uncertain about what adulthood holds. The first feature film from director Anthony Burns, Skateland was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The old saying about "this is where the rubber meets the road" takes on a new and sinister meaning in this black comedy from filmmaker Quentin Dupieux. An old tire appears in a California desert, and under its own power it begins rolling down the road, stopping and starting as it pleases. The notion that the tire can operate under its own power isn't half as remarkable as its other talent -- the tire has telekinetic abilities and can make things explode at will, including human heads. The evil tire goes on a killing spree after its affections for a beautiful woman (Roxane Mesquida) are thwarted, and local lawman Lt. Chad (Stephen Spinella) steps forward to investigate. Meanwhile, a handful of people aware of the tire and its actions are watching it from a safe distance until they're poisoned by a mysterious villain; one of them (Wings Hauser) manages to survive, and is looking for some revenge of his own. Rubber was an official selection at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A teenager reconsiders the sibling who's been a hero to him in this independent coming-of-age drama. Ted Wheeler (Lorenzo James Henrie) looks up to his older brother Truck (Alex Frost), who's the closest thing to a strong adult role model in his life -- their father (Billy Campbell) is a bitter, disabled alcoholic who emotionally checked out years ago, their mother ran away years ago, and Truck has had to raise his little brother mostly on his own. Ted is about to enter high school as Truck begins his senior year as a star of the football team; Truck wants to help his brother, so he persuades his fellow members of "The Kings," an informal high school gang, to let Ted join the club. Ted begins to have second thoughts about Truck and the Kings when, as part of his initiation, he's supposed to get a freshman girl drunk and have sex with her; he opts to lie and say he deflowered the girl when he didn't really touch her, but he has to live with the lingering consequences of his story. The Kings' drinking and violence begins to catch up with Ted, and while he has his eye on one of his classmates, a cute but bookish girl named Kallea (Haley Ramm), his lies and the Kings' real indiscretions may put a stake in his future. Almost Kings (aka The Wheeler Boys) was the first feature film from director Philip G. Flores; the picture won the "Find Your Voice" Award at the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival, sponsored by Netflix, which earned the director over $300,000 in equipment and materials for an upcoming project. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Two big families merge into one super-sized brood in this comedy. Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) is a naval officer who has been raising eight children on his own after the death of his wife, and while he loves his kids, he rules his household with military precision. Frank has been alone just long enough that he decides it's time to start dating again, and he agrees to be set up on a blind date for a social function. To his surprise, his date turns out to be Helen North (Rene Russo), a girl he dated years ago when they were both in high school who, like Frank, lost her spouse not long ago. The old chemistry clicks anew for Helen and Frank, and he asks her to marry him. However, there's just a bit of a problem -- Helen is caring for ten children of her own, six of whom were adopted, and her artistic temperament makes for a very different household than Frank and his kids are used to. Frank and Helen decide to give this grand experiment a try, but the 18 siblings don't get along at all well at first, until they decide to set aside their differences and unite against a common foe -- their folks. Yours, Mine & Ours is a remake of a 1968 comedy of the same name, which starred Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball as the newlywed parents. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A woman is forced to prove her own sanity to save the life of her daughter in this taut thriller. Kyle Pratt (Jodie Foster) is a successful aircraft designer who has recently been dealing with the traumatic death of her husband. After traveling to Berlin on business with her six-year-old daughter, Julia (Marlene Lawston), Kyle falls asleep on their flight back to New York, only to discover that her daughter has gone missing. While not knowing where Julia has gone is troubling enough, even more disturbing is the insistence by sky marshal Gene Carson (Peter Sarsgaard) and Captain Rich (Sean Bean) that no records indicate that the child ever boarded the jet. As Kyle becomes increasingly desperate to find her daughter, she must prove to the men in charge that her daughter did in fact board the plane with her, and that this turn of events is not a product of her imagination. But if Julia has gone missing, who has taken her and why? Also starring Erika Christensen and Kate Beahan, Flightplan was the first English-language feature from German director Robert Schwentke. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
