The memory of a brief romance leads a man to a mysterious destination in this story of love and music. Auyeung San-tek (Tse Kwan-ho) is a struggling writer who once met a beautiful young music student, Xiaohui, during an evening in Taiwan. San-tek and Xiaohui soon fell for one another, and pledged to meet again in ten years if they lost touch. Their paths had not crossed in many years when San-tek received a postcard from Xiaohui reminding him that they still had a date. San-tek doesn't expect much from the evening, but dutifully arrives at a small hotel in Qiandeng, a town known throughout China as the birthplace of the Kunqu Opera, where Xiaohui will contact him. As San-tek waits for word from Xiaohui, he strikes up a friendship with Xiaohe (Yin Shuo), a lovely girl who sings with the opera when she isn't busy looking after the family-run hotel and caring for her elderly grandmother (Hu Lifang). San-tek receives a gift of a wooden flute from a nameless admirer, and he becomes closer to Xiaohe, whose sunny personality helps him buffer the sharp edges of his cynical nature. As San-tek learns more about both opera and Xiaohe over the course of several days, he tries to find out what became of the woman he was infatuated with ten years ago. Di Sheng Hechu (aka A Promise) was the first feature film from director Cui Yi. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
