This spy film purports to be inspired by the true story of Kim Philby (1912-1988), a British intelligence officer and Soviet spy during the 1940s and '50s who gained international notoriety when he blew his cover and defected to the USSR in 1963. But this fictional, unsophisticated, if not naive docudrama portrays a world of espionage in a cross between Nancy Drew and Sam Spade, and Philby's real story is buried in the process. The film opens with British double agent Philip Kimberly (Michael Caine) undergoing complete plastic surgery by order of his Soviet bosses, while his death is announced in the world press. With a different name and face, Kimberly -- now Kuzminsky -- is sent back to England in the guise of a Soviet citizen to retrieve a secret list of names he supposedly hid several years ago. Kusminsky/Kimberly defects at the British passport control, and later escapes his British guards -- leading to a manhunt by both British and Soviet agents. His chief nemesis is Admiral Scaith (Laurence Olivier) and the man he assigns to the case, Jaime Fraser (Robert Powell) -- who just happens to be living with Kimberly's daughter. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

During the 16th century, it was prophesied that "When Hugh succeeds Hugh, Ireland shall be free." Hugh was the Prince of Donegal and his son Red Hugh, his successor. This lush and lively Disney adventure chronicles the young man's tumultuous ascension to the throne and his attempts to unite the many clans of Erin. Along the way, Red Hugh falls in love, is imprisoned by the British in Dublin Castle, and then fights to free Donegal Castle where his lady is being held. In this British melodrama based on a French novel by Catherine Arley, Sean Connery plays Anthony Richmond, a money-hungry young man enraged that his rich, dying uncle doesn't plan to include him in his will. Instead, Charles Richmond (Ralph Richardson) plans to give his fortune to charity. Anthony recruits a young nurse, Maria (Gina Lollobrigida), for a nefarious scheme. Her job is to care for the old man and get him to marry her and change the will so she gets his fortune. Then she will give Anthony a three-million-dollar share. There's something fishy about the fact that an airliner crash took place near an Irish convent -- especially since it was one of several similar crashes occuring in the same vicinity. Investigating this phenomenon, Steed and Dr. King find that the local nuns are tightlipped and uncooperative, and at least one is potentially dangerous. The truth behind the "accidents" is obvious from the start, but getting there is half the fun. The devotion between an Irish orphan boy and his beloved pet donkey provides the basis of this touching children's adventure. The boy had been living on his grandfather's farm helping to raise the beasts of burden when his beloved pet, Patchy, is inadvertently sold and shipped to England. Determined to be reunited, the boy sets off to find him. He succeeds, enters Patchy in a donkey race, and wins.
