Keir Gilchrist Movies

London-born actor Keir Gilchrist began his career onscreen at the urging of his acting coach, getting his start with small roles in some minor films like Saint Ralph, before moving on to a starring role in the series The Winner in 2007. The show was canceled after only six episodes, but Gilchrist had no trouble finding new projects, eventually scoring the role of Marshall on the acclaimed Showtime series The United States of Tara. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

A struggling farmer must choose between several desperate options in this period drama, set in Canada in the 1950s. Snit Mandolin (Keir Gilchrist) is a young man whose family emigrated to Canada when he was a boy; they were viewed with deep suspicion by their new neighbors in Saskatchewan, and when his parents died, Snit was sent to live in a group home where brutal violence was commonplace. Snit is released and returns to Saskatchewan to find that his Aunt Matilda (Gabrielle Rose) is the only person still living on the family's farm, and she's left the fields and the cattle in a deplorable state. Snit wants to turn the farm back into a going concern, but he needs money, something Matilda can't provide. Snit becomes reacquainted with Johnny (Alexander De Jordy), one of his few friends from childhood, and Johnny offers to help Snit make raise some cash by working for him. However, Johnny's business is making bootleg whiskey, and with local sheriff Roy Kane (John Pyper-Ferguson) looking for an excuse to drive Snit out of town, moonshining could cost him his farm as readily as neglect or the elements. Based on a novel by one of Canada's most celebrated authors, George Ryga's Hungry Hills was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Created by Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy and American Dad fame, the weekly Fox comedy series The Winner was a remake of the 2002 movie Becoming Glen. The TV version was essentially extended flashback, recalled in "the present" by 43-year-old Buffalo resident Glen Abbott (played by former Daily Show contributor Rob Corddry). The action took place in 1994, when Glen was a 32-year-old virgin hypochondriac, still living at home with his parents Irene (Linda Hart) and Ron (Lenny Clarke). Most of the stories revolved around Glen's relationship with former girl-next-door Alison (Erinn Hayes), who'd returned to Buffalo a single mom with her 12-year-old son Keir (Josh Miller)--who, curiously, looked and behaved just like Glen--in tow. Throughout the series, the viewer was forearmed with the knowledge that, twelve years or so later, Glen Abbott would be a billionaire enterpreneur. . .though precious few clues were given as to how this metamorphosis would come about! The Winner debuted March 4, 2007, as a companion piece for Seth MacFarlane's animated Sunday-night offerings. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A young man with big dreams sets out to do the seemingly impossible in this bittersweet comedy drama. Ralph Walker (Adam Butcher) is a 14-year-old boy growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1954. Ralph is convinced he's cut out to do something remarkable some day, but he hasn't quite decided what, and at the moment he has other things to worry about. Ralph's father has recently died, as have his grandparents, and his mother (Shauna MacDonald) is severely ill and in the hospital, leaving the boy to fend for himself at home. Despite Ralph's tragic circumstances and his attendance at a Catholic school led by strict headmaster Father Fitzpatrick (Gordon Pinsent), the young man maintains a cheeky attitude and often gets on the wrong side of his teachers, and one remarkable display of poor behavior causes Fitzpatrick to sentence Ralph to membership on the school's cross-country team. The team's coach, Father Hibbert (Campbell Scott), discovers Ralph has real talent as a runner, and encourages the boy to train seriously. When doctors inform Ralph that only a miracle can save his mother's life, he strikes upon an idea -- it would be a little short of a miracle for a talented but inexperienced runner like himself to finish first in the Boston Marathon, so Ralph sets his sights on winning the race, certain in his heart that a victory could restore his mother's health. Saint Ralph also features Jennifer Tilly and Tamara Hope. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
