The attempts of a Muslim immigrant to bring his second wife from Algiers to Italy are chronicled in this Italian drama. In the Italian Constitution, article 2 allows citizens the freedom to practice their religion. Said, a factory worker in Milan, lives with his first wife Malika, and their three children in a small apartment. They are all Muslims. His second wife Fatma, stayed in Algeria to take care of his ailing father. When he dies, Fatma wants to join Said in Italy. But when she finally arrives with her three sons, the authorities will not allow her into the country as bigamy is illegal. But under Islamic law it is legal. The Italian government, despite article 2, is not sympathetic to Said's situation. Said fights for his second wife, but is at first, appalled to learn he has been assigned a female lawyer. Andrea (Leonardo Trame) has always loved his eccentric old aunt Gianna (Pamela Villoresi). After she suffers the loss of her husband, she asks his parents if he could stay with her in her Rome apartment over December, undoubtedly to help her through the difficulties of the holiday period. They agree to this arrangement. She is a delightful companion for the boy, sharing his love of movies and fairy tales. The situation becomes more difficult when she confides to him that she feels sure she is being followed and observed. What could have been the fantasy of a slightly demented older woman is shown to have been real, and the boy does yoeman service in rescuing her from (and capturing) a burglar. This drama is told entirely from the point of view of the young boy, and he can only partly understand the events which unfold around him. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In a straightforward yet unexceptional rendering of the life and loves of Alberto (Ben Gazzara), a writer/director approaching the hill though not yet over it, director Alberto Bevilacqua has used his own experiences to fashion a conventional tale about a search for the "perfect woman." His mettlesome neighbor Luisa (Lina Sastri) just will not leave him alone; she was the reason why he ended his marriage to Maura (Claudia Cardinale), but Alberto considers their affair dead and buried. Recently, an anonymous "dream woman" has been calling him for some seductive phone exchanges. As he searches out the identity of the mystery caller he is also distracted by Luisa who starts to insinuate herself back into his affections. Sooner or later, Alberto will just have to decide how to handle his love life, which in the end may only be mesmerizing to himself alone. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
