It is the year 2009, and civilization has almost perished on the planet, choked to death by pollution. The only place it survives is in the frigid far north. There, the few survivors are governed by a harsh military government, and dissenters quickly find themselves rounded up by the murderous Duke (Jurgen Prochnow). The picture opens as Jake (Jolyon Baker), a captive of Duke's, manages to escape. He helps rescue a peddler (Matti Pellonpaa) from the aftereffects of a motorcycle accident, and in gratitude the merchant helps Jake get free of his handcuffs. Another escapee is an amnesiac but capable woman (Fanny Bastien), who becomes a romantic partner of sorts, as they almost inadvertently manage to bring down the murderous enforcer. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This drama looks into the life of French painter Paul Gauguin. Donald Sutherland plays Gauguin as he struggles through a few years in the 1890s in Montmartre after he has come back from his first stay in Tahiti. His new and radical painting style is not amenable to easy acceptance, as witnessed by August Strindberg's rejection of it here. The best segments of this film show the artist at work and talking with his friends, other less successful moments show him in amorous liaisons or in one case, in a fight sequence. Most of all, his dedication to his artistic vision as well as the depth of his personality are elements which maintain interest throughout, in a large part due to Sutherland's insightful portrayal of the artist. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

When a neo-Nazi group of terrorists is set to blow a pop concert off the face of the earth because it is an anti-racist benefit, they are faced with the intrepid Jean-Pierre Mougin (Richard Berry), a macho sports reporter with zero tolerance for Nazi hate crimes. Going along with Mougin to stop the bombing is Lyza (Fanny Bastien), whose brother was killed by this group of fascists, and so she is ardently seeking revenge. After Mougin gets his hands on a videotape that reveals the plot to blow up the concert and its audience, he and Lyza join forces. As the fuse gets shorter and shorter, Mougin is also joined by sympathetic street gangs. Thus reinforced, he faces his opposition (including crooked cops) in increasingly more desperate attempts to stop Murmeau (Jean Francoise Balmer), the leader of the Nazi gang, from carrying out his terrorist objective. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A misanthropic comedy by Gérard Lauzier, Tête Dans Le Sac satirizes the arrogance of a 50-year-old owner of a prosperous ad agency as he tries to join a swinging, twentysomething clique of fast-living friends. Romain (Guy Marchand) drives a Jaguar, lives in an opulent bachelor pad, and has a gorgeous mistress (Marisa Berenson) -- yet he is trying to seduce the 22-year-old Eva (Fanny Bastien). She, in turn, is really interested in Dany (Patrick Bruel), a young man whom Romain hires to work in his agency. While Romain is played for a fool by Eva and her friends among the cocaine crowd, Dany has his own plans for the future and they do not involve his foolish boss. Aside from a few stereotypical portrayals of the denizens of a wild nightlife, Lauzier succeeds at revving his cynicism into high gear as the young sharks swim around an unsuspecting Romain. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
