An employee at the factory has just suffered an unfortunate accident on the assembly line, but little does the put-upon owner realize that things are about to get much worse. A man having trouble with women suddenly finds himself surrounded by them in this independent comedy drama. Carter Webb (Adam Brody) is a successful writer who has fallen into an emotional tailspin after his girlfriend, well-known actress Sophia (Elena Anaya), breaks up with him. When Carter learns that his grandmother (Olympia Dukakis) is in failing health, he decides to leave California and return to his hometown of Detroit to help take care of her and beginning work on his long-planned novel. As Carter spends time with his grandmother, he becomes friendly with her neighbors -- mom Sarah Hardwicke (Meg Ryan) and her two daughters, angst-ridden teen Lucy (Kristen Stewart) and precocious 11-year-old Paige (Makenzie Vega). As Sarah attempts to deal with a pressing personal crisis and Carter begins sorting out his relationship issues, he discovers that sometimes what feels like the end is actually just a new beginning. One of the first prime-time offerings of the fledgling CW network, Runaway starred Donnie Wahlberg as DC-based district attorney Paul Rader, who in the series opener was framed for the murder of his sexy associate Erin. This and the fact that the actual (and unknown) killer had threatened Paul's teenaged children Henry (Dustin Milligan), Hannah (Sarah Ramos) and Tommy (Nathan Gamble) prompted his wife Lily (Dustin Milligan) to suggest that the Raders go on the lam immediately. After skeedaddling Washington, the family resettled in the small town of Bridgewater, Iowa, where they assumed new identities: Paul became "Jim", Lily "Brenda", Henry "Jason", Hannah "Kate" and Tommy "Mikey." Despite the pressures on the kids, who resented being uprooted from their home and had a lot of trouble establishing new relationships in and out of high school, and even allowing for Lily's inability to keep the family's "backstory" straight for their new neighbors (at first she claimed to be from Philadelphia, only to add the "fact" that she was a Hurricane Katrina refugee!), the Raders adapted to their new surroundings and personalities with relative ease. Alas, Paul began receiving threatening text messages indicating that the villains knew his whereabouts--and just as bad, Bridgewater became the headquarters of inquisitive FBI agent Angela Huntley (Karen LeBlanc). Sort of a "Seventh Heaven Meets The Fugitive", the series was executive-produced by Darren Star (Melrose Place, Sex and the City. This hastily assembled rehash of the infamous Laci Peterson murder case is based on Amber Frey's book Witness: For the Proseuction of Scott Peterson, which may explain why she comes off as the most sympathetic person in the film. Basically, the script adheres to the facts: The mistress of Scott Peterson (Nathan Anderson), Amber Frey (Janel Moloney) begins to suspect that something is amiss with her sweetheart when, during what is supposed to his trip to Europe, he is suddenly popping up on every TV station and cable service in the country, swearing up and down that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of his wife Laci and their unborn son Connor. Eventually, Amber decides to cooperate with the Modesto Police Department in their efforts to pin a murder rap on Scott, agreeing to wear a wire while conversing with Scott over his domestic travails. In his frenzied efforts to counteract previous lies by cooking up new ones, Peterson effectively puts the noose around his own neck--and Amber rightfully emerges as the heroine of the piece (though not, it is hinted, without putting her own life in jeopardy in process). Somehow, the film manages to work in several plugs for the self-help book "du jour", The Purpose-Driven Life.
