Walt's father, Michael (Harold Perrineau), is very unhappy with the close friendship that is developing between the somewhat creepy survivalist Locke (Terry O'Quinn) and Walt, and tries to put an end to it. And, once again, a ferocious animal that is unfit for tropical climates makes an appearance in the jungle...this time attacking young Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) when he runs off on his own after yet another disagreement with Michael. Flashbacks in this episode give insight into the strained relationship between Michael and Walt -- and indicate that there may be something "different" about the boy. In other events on the island, Shannon (Maggie Grace) finally starts to use her knowledge of French to help Sayid (Naveen Andrews), and Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) wants to know much, much more about the still-missing Claire (Emilie de Ravin). ~ All Movie Guide

Having been kidnapped several episodes back, Claire (Emilie de Raven) suddenly re-emerges. The other survivors pump her for information, but she can remember nothing of her ordeal -- nor of anything that occurred since even before the plane crash. Meanwhile, Claire's self-proclaimed abductor, Ethan (William Mapother), threatens to methodically kill the others unless the girl is returned to him, forcing Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) into violent retribution. And more flashbacks reveal just how low Charlie had sunk in his heroin addiction prior to the plane crash. ~ All Movie Guide

The mystery of those French radio transmissions is revealed to Sayid (Naveen Andrews) -- but he may not live long enough to tell the other survivors. On a less serious note, roly-poly Hurley (Jorge Garcia) comes up with a silly plan to bring a bit of entertainment to the island, involving a set of golf clubs recovered from the wreckage of the plane. And an extended flashback tells us more than we'd like to know about Sayid's previous life as an Iraqi Republican Guard. Mira Furlan guest stars as Danielle Rousseau, a character who was decidedly not on the passenger list. ~ All Movie Guide

The reclusive Locke (Terry O'Quinn) is willing to help Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) wean himself away from his drug habit -- but he won't explain why he has suddenly become so generous with his time. Flashbacks reveal how Charlie's life as a rock star and his troubled relationship with his bandmate brother (Neil Hopkins) led to his drug habit in the first place. In other developments, Michael (Harold Perrineau) sets Hurley (Jorge Garcia) straight as to the ethnic origins of Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sun (Yunjin Kim); and the efforts by Sayid (Naveen Andrews), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and Boone (Ian Somerhalder) to find out who has been sending radio transmissions in French are thwarted by an unknown antagonist. Worse still is the plight of Jack (Matthew Fox), who is buried alive in a collapsing cave. ~ All Movie Guide

This episode focuses on plane-crash survivor Claire (Emilie de Raven), and her memories of the man who left her pregnant before abandoning her. We also learn that a psychic had advised Claire to make her ill-fated trip -- and now she is having a premonition of her own, one that may prove disastrous for her unborn baby. And in another part of the island, fun-loving Hurley (Jorge Garcia) is not at all amused to come face to face with another person who wasn't on the passenger list (William Mapother plays the odd man out). ~ All Movie Guide

The presence of malevolent forces on the island is made obvious to the survivors when Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) and Claire (Emilie de Raven) are kidnapped. The number one suspect is Ethan Rom (William Mapother), the "interloper" whom Hurley realized had not been a passenger on the plane in the previous episode. Even so, a search party makes a foray into the jungle...where anything can happen and already has! More of Jack's (Matthew Fox) troubled past is revealed through flashbacks, with John Terry making a guest appearance as Jack's father, Dr. Christian Shephard. Elsewhere, Boone (Ian Somerhalder) and Locke (Terry O'Quinn) stumble onto a surprise while they are searching for Charlie and Claire. ~ All Movie Guide
