Norwegian writer-director Erik Richter Strand's debut feature, the domestic thriller Sønner (AKA Sons) follows Lars (Nils Jorgen Kaalstad), a 25-year-old man with a short fuse, who works as a lifeguard at the nearby public baths. He becomes acquainted with a local teenager, Tim (Mikkel Bratt Silset) whom he catches spying on the girls in the facility's shower, then later observes Tim and several other young boys interacting with Hans (Henrik Mestad), a gentleman recently accused of pedophilic behavior. Suspicious, Lars quietly trails Hans and Tim back to Hans's car, where he videotapes Tim sexually pleasuring Hans in the front seat. Hans catches Lars at the last minute and unsuccessfully attempts to run him down; some time later, Tim turns up and begs Lars for the videocassette, which an infuriated Lars refuses to hand over. Privately, Lars vows to bring Hans toppling down at any costs - a lingering obsession that costs him his job at the baths. He begins spending all of his waking hours stalking Hans, and then - eventually - confronts the pervert at his house and discovers a computer overloaded with explicit pictures of Hans having sex with young boys - including a local TV personality. Now boiling over with rage, Lars finds the TV host and insists that he air the video tape with Tim's face blacked out. The plan succeeds, but ultimately puts at risk - and humiliates - the underage victims whom Lars sought to protect. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

In this allegorical children's melodrama, nine-year old Tom and Lola (Neil Stubbs and Melodie Colin) have been kept in super-sanitary conditions all their lives, and have only rarely ventured outside their clinical environment wrapped in plastic. They have been told that they have a radical immune deficiency, and will die if exposed to a normal environment. Surreptitiously, they begin to test the truth of this assertion by escaping from supervision in the middle of the night, and discover that whatever their adult captors believe, they are just fine. One day they escape for good. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this semi-autobiographical comedy by Francis Perrin, he plays a character partially based on himself in the guise of Francois Veber, a lowly electrician from the provinces who finds success as an actor in the Comedie-Francaise. Veber/Perrin goes to study acting at the Paris Conservatoire and has some fine teachers who help to hone his latent comic abilities. After coming to the attention of his superiors as an excellent student (he won a Conservatoire competition with a monologue from "The Marriage of Figaro"), Veber/Perrin is accepted into the prestigious Comedie-Francaise. Defying the judgment of its administrator, he pulls off a rousing interpretation of Moliere's Scapin. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A tall and gangly Victoire (Liselotte Christian) arrives in Paris looking for the ideal French lover -- and because she stands well above many of her preceding romantic partners, that is an added dimension to consider. As she finds and drops a series of possibilities -- a free-wheeling sociologist, an up-tight intellectual, and a dentist fixated on sports -- she begins to wonder if this simple quest may turn out to be an impossibility after all. Although director Annette Carducci) tends to stereotype the male characters, their characterizations fit the premises of a light comedy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The Gift was based on Bankers Also Have Souls, a play by Valme and Terzolli. To honor retiring co-worker Gregoire (Pierre Mondy), a group of bank employees pool their money and purchase a farewell gift: gorgeous prostitute Barbara (Clio Goldsmith). Since Gregoire is married to the luscious Antonella (Claudia Cardinale), one wonders what planet his friends have been on the past few years. Though it promises a great deal, The Gift is basically harmless and, at times, humorless. The film works best when it eschews sniggling sexiness and concentrates on personalities. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
