Upon discovering that her husband is having an affair, a Helsinki gynecologist attempts to gather more knowledge about her rival and, in the process, becomes hopelessly entangled in the other woman's life - partially on purpose but primarily out of happenstance. Saara is pretty, elegant, liberal, and friendly to a fault. Yet while surface appearances would suggest that Saara is something of an open book, the truth is that lately no one has looked deeper enough to notice otherwise. Driven by jealousy to find out why her husband Leo has grown distant as of late, the sleuthing wife soon discovers that her spouse has recently entered into an affair with a young student and part-time martial arts instructor named Tulli. Her desire to learn more about Tulli growing with each passing hour, Saara eventually signs up as a student in one of the woman's self-defense classes. Eventually, Saara integrates herself into Tulli's life by blending fact and fiction to create a new persona. While Saara's crafty bid to find out more about Tulli without revealing her true identity is indeed successful, her deceptions start to snowball after she creates a fictitious lover in order to mislead her husband. The satisfaction of turning the tables on her husband gradually begins to dissipate, however, when the complex web of deceit becomes too unwieldy to maintain, plunging everyone involved into a hopeless cycle of despair and revenge. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

An unemployed woman looking for work in a Finnish television station unexpectedly stumbles into a position as a soap opera writer in director Janne Kuusi's comic behind the scenes romp. Ilona is young, beautiful, and out of work. After applying for a job at a Finnish television station, Ilona is sent into the wrong room for her interview and walks away as the new writer for a popular daytime drama. Ilona is instantly smitten with star Kale, and quickly begins using her power as a writer to craft scripts stealthily designed to draw the pair together. Unfortunately for Ilona, Kale is already romantically involved with producer Raakel -- who isn't about to let a little thing like marriage get in the way of a hot on-set romance. When Raakel catches wind of Ilona's scheme, the two lovelorn women clash and use their influence on the show to wage personal warfare against one another. As the backstage clashes between Raakel and Ilona begin to mirror the drama playing out on the small screen, the fierce competition for Kale provides fodder for some of the shows best scripts. Now, passions ignite and the crew begins preparations for the live season finale, it soon becomes obvious that not all of the drama unfolding on this popular soap opera is as artificial as one might assume. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Little Anni (Kirsikka Tykkylaainen) has lost her mother. Now she and her father Timppa (Kari Heiskinen) live alone. This wouldn't be so bad, but her eminently loveable dad is such a lousy cook, and also it seems a shame that he should have to be alone. So Anni makes it her business to find a mate for her shy father. She manages to get Timppa to date a lot of different women. One woman after another is tried out: this one is too brisk, that one is too insensitive. It seems that no one is quite right, until Leena (usanna Haavisto), a very nice redheaded woman, comes along. With Anni's help, she is walking down the aisle in no time. This lively Finnish children's movie features a great many songs which highlight or comment on the action. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The Match Factory Girl is a Finnish/ Swedish coproduction. Kati Outinen plays the title character, trapped in a deadly dull job and an even deadlier duller home life. Against her family's wishes, she purchases a bright red dress and heads out for a night on the town. She spends the evening with a handsome wealthy man, who shows how significant this sexual pairing is by leaving her alone the next morning with a large sum of money. Not wishing to tell her parents of her misadventure, Outinen splits the money with her brother, then waits in vain for her "lover" to return. When she finds she is pregnant, she writes a syrupy note to her erstwhile swain, who coldly sends her a money order and instructs her to get an abortion. Even her family turns on her when her condition becomes obvious. With her remaining savings, Outinen purchases a generous supply of rat poison--not for herself, but for all the people who did her dirt throughout the film. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
