A powerful supermarket tycoon attempts to pull his son back from the brink in director János Vecsernyés' adaptation of Nobel laureate Imre Kertesz's acclaimed novel. The setting is an unnamed country. The population has been led to believe that order is maintained under the authority of the secret police, leading to an environment of paranoia and despair. Lately, supermarket tycoon Hoffman has been disturbed to see his friends disappearing without a trace. His son is sinking into a deep sea of despair, but perhaps if Hoffman can lift the veil that shrouds the public's vision he can simultaneously ease his son's depression. While at first Hoffman's ingenious plan seems to go off without a hitch, things start to look bad after his boy is taken in for questioning by the secret police. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
