A generation of young adults ponder their friendships, loves, expectations, and life ambitions while wandering the streets of a city that evolves at a faster rate than they mature in Dutch director David Verbeek's three-tiered look at life in the contemporary Chinese city of Shanghai. The first tale, a melancholy meditation on lost love, follows intelligent country-boy Xu Yu as the object of his affections drifts away after becoming enamored by the world of the nouveau riche and moving into a wealthy new district. Later, night owl hipsters Jenny and her boyfriend Calvin, a popular nightclub DJ, are troubled to learn just how temporary and vulnerable their vapid lifestyle truly is. A pregnant woman with no one to turn to discovers that the woman she detests most may be the only person capable of helping her navigate the rocky roads ahead in director Yin Lichuan's entry into the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Daping despises Haili. It was Haili who wandered out of nowhere into Daping's life, destroying any chance of a serious relationship with Chen Jin. Haili bullies Daping mercilessly for her efforts in trying to be a kind and honest person, so when Chen Jin leaves Haili pregnant and alone, the mother-to-be thinks her life is over. Revenge is a dish best served in drag in this romantic comedy-drama from China. Li Jiawu (Alex Fong) used to be the publisher of a high-profile gossip magazine, but legal problems put his paper out business, and his fall from grace led to a nasty breakup with his girlfriend, successful actress Ye Qing (Kong Wei). Li Jiawu is determined to get back in the game by launching a high-profile fashion and lifestyle magazine for men, and he plans to publicize the launch by staging a talent competition to find China's next male superstar. Li Jiawu asks Ye Qing if she'd be willing to help by serving as a judge for the contest; Ye Qing is still angry with her ex, and she agrees to participate while planning to sabotage the contest from within. Ye Qing persuades her sister (Zhang Jing) to enter the talent contest posing as a man in hopes of embarrassing Li Jiawu, and she's convincing enough that that the male impersonator makes it into the final rounds. But working with Li Jiawu reminds Ye Quing of why she loved him in the first place, and with her sister a serious contender to win the grand prize, she's not sure she still wants to punish her former beau. Screenwriter Cai Shangjun makes his feature directorial debut with this earnest study of father/son relationships concerning an absentee father who returns home after five years to discover that his wife has died and he has been declared officially dead. Song (Yao Anlain) has been working away from home for five years, and quite a bit has changed since he last saw his family. Song is now a widower, and his son has filed paperwork claiming that he is now officially an orphan. While it won't be easy reconnecting with the bitter teenager after all these years, Song does his best to bond with the boy as father and son attempt to sustain themselves through farming. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
