The award-winning Austrian film Welcome in Vienna unfolds a true story that has long been shunted aside by military historians. The film concerns those Austrian and German immigrants who fought with the American forces during World War 2. Specifically, the story deals with Austrian Jew Freddy Wolff (Gabriel Barylli) and German intellectual Adler (Nicholas Brieger). Wolff must contend with the anti-Semitism of his German-American sergeant (Joachim Kemmer), while Adler is ideologically drifting towards communism. The shock of meeting old friends on the "other" side and of finding that their homes no longer exist as they remember them are only some of the additional challenges faced by the two protagonists. Upon its first release, Welcome in Vienna stirred up a small controversy by suggesting that the Austrian people were not merely the helpless victims of Nazi tyranny, but were as responsible as any individual "fifth columnist" in helping Hitler overwhelm the rest of Europe. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Gabriel Barylli, Nicolas Brieger, (more)
In an interesting tale of romantic obsession, an introverted young projectionist catches some love-making going on in one corner of the dark movie theater where he works, and recognizes the woman involved as a popular television newscaster he adores. He manages to steal the key to her apartment from her purse, and later lets himself in. This is the first step that leads to a love affair between the two, but soon he becomes fixated on the woman - spying on her, needing to control the relationship totally. His attitude is a disaster waiting to happen. Writer, director, and editor Niklaus Schilling shot this drama with a video camera and then transferred the tape to celluloid film in the laboratory, perhaps adding a little "TV verité" to the end product, but also creating a lot of graininess in the process. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

- Gerhard Acktun, Isolde Barth, (more)
Set in the 1930s, Prof. Kupfer (Werner Kreindl) is a new, straight-laced, authoritarian math teacher assigned the graduating class as his students, and embodying much of what the Nazis wanted in their teachers. Kurt Gerber (Gabriel Barylli) is the class leader, someone who is pressured to keep up good grades and peer approval, but who will not hestitate at unethical means to maintain his image. Both the professor and Gerber start out on a collision course that does nothing to lessen the professor's derogatory comments on individual behavior, or his penchant for handing out failing grades. The prospect of going through what will certainly be torturous oral finals with the professor starts to haunt Gerber, leaving him with a despair that seems to have no resolution. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
