An elderly husband suffering from a terminal illness begins to appreciate his wife on a whole new level after she dies suddenly during a trip to see their children and grandchildren in Berlin. Rudi is not long for this world, but only his doctor and his wife, Trudi, know how serious his condition has truly become. As Trudi wrestles with whether or not to break the news to her ailing husband, the doctor recommends to her that the couple perhaps do something that they have been planning for years but could never find the time to fit into their busy schedules. Later, after convincing Rudi to travel with her to Berlin and visit their family for the first time in years, the couple is heartbroken to realize that their children have no time for them. When Trudi suddenly passes away and Rudi realizes that he never knew his wife as well as he wanted to or expressed his affection in a way that truly reverberated, the widower is devastated to discover just what sacrifices Trudi had made to be with him. In the aftermath of that discovery, Rudi dedicates his remaining days to realizing Trudi's unfulfilled dreams and traveling to Tokyo to celebrate her life during the breathtaking cherry blossom festival -- a colorful festival staged to celebrate beauty, impermanence, and new beginnings. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This picaresque, melancholically-tinged German-language biopic from director Markus Rosenmüller dramatizes the colorful life-story of Mathias Kneissl, one of the most legendary bandits-turned-folk heroes in European history. The time and place in question: Bavaria at the turn of the 20th century. Born into a working-class family with the slimmest of prospects, Mathias has little choice but to turn to a life of crime. By the age of 17, he's involved in illegal poaching of game to enable the day-to-day survival of his family, assisted by his 15-year-old brother Alois and his beloved father. This, alas, ends on a heartbreaking note when gendarmes catch Herr Kneissl in the act and systematically beat him to death; in the process, Alois completely loses his patience, whips out a gun, and shoots one of the officers in the head, injuring him. Tragically, although Matthias had nothing to do with this action, he gets thrown behind bars as an accomplice along with his dear brother, and serves a six-year sentence. Upon release, Matthais makes a sincere and legitimate attempt to go straight - a desire abetted by his relationship with the lovely Mathilde, with whom he settles down. But in time, the officer with the head injury, Forsch, turns up once again, wracked by vengeance and driven by a desire to systematically ruin Mathias's life. In the end, Forsch's efforts prove so successful that Mathias has no choice but to turn back in the direction of crime. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A battle for gay rights is fought on a small-time football field in this comedy drama from Germany. Ecki (Maximilian Brückner) is a talented soccer goalie who plays with a semi-pro team in a small German town, but he finds himself on the outs with his teammates when he fails to block a kick that costs the team the league championship. Ecki's relationship with the team goes from bad to worse when they discover he's gay, and they give him his walking papers. Furious, Ecki challenges his former team to a special match in which they'll face off against an all-gay team he'll assemble for the occasion. The homophobic team agrees to the match, but Ecki soon discovers finding ten capable gay footballers is no easy task, and making them into a competitive team is even harder. Making matters a bit easier for Ecki is his sister Susanne (Lisa Maria Potthoff), who introduces him to one of her co-workers, Sven (David Rott), a good-looking male nurse who can play soccer...and happens to find Ecki attractive. Männer Wie Wir (aka Guys and Balls) was written for the screen by Benedikt Gollhardt; it was his first theatrical film after establishing himself in television. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
