This compelling low-budget horror-fantasy from Welsh filmmaker Julian Richards made a splash at several fantasy film festivals, where it often garnered a more favorable reception than Hollywood big-budget product. The plot follows the investigations of English journalist Frazer Truick (Craig Fairbrass) into the disappearance of a colleague's brother in South Wales. His snooping unearths the elaborate political machinations of a long-standing, ultra-conservative faction known as "Regeneration," whose followers, under the leadership of businessman David Keller (Jon Finch), intend to return Wales to its ancient Celtic ways... including the practice of human sacrifices. Insidious plot twists abound, all of which point to Truick's unknowing role in the sect's master plan. Richards' excellent script may draw its thematic inspiration from The Wicker Man, and those familiar with that film may not be entirely surprised by the climax; the story nevertheless contains many unconventional surprises, and it maintains an effective balance between political allegory and pure suspense. Further enhanced by excellent photography and an intense performance from Fairbrass, Darklands represents a remarkable debut from an assured genre talent. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

There are only two real ways to save it; one is to marry an aristocratic regional sheriff whom she despises, and the other is to find enough money to pay the debt directly. She opts for the latter, deciding that the best way to accomplish that would be to sell the estate's 200 head of cattle in Gloucester. The trouble is, Gloucester is a long way from her land and most of the men able to help her are in the British army. The only one able to help is the sheriff's hated alcoholic half-brother (literally and figuratively a bastard) Rhys. However, Calloway (Richard Lynch), the leader of a battalion of all-male ravagers who plunder the post-nuke plains for whatever they can find, discovers a community where men, women, and children are actually living together in something resembling civilization. It seems that a scientist was able to develop a serum that rendered the twin viruses harmless; however, the inventor is killed as Calloway and his men raid the village. The inventor's son, Joe Knight (Bryan Genesee), survives, and he must learn the secrets to his father's formula. He gets some unexpected help from McCabe (James Brolin), a renegade peacekeeper on the run from Calloway, and Shara (Kehli O'Byrne), who with McCabe is eager to discover the formula for the serum and begin repopulating the world. October 16, 1993, the first part of this episode begins on a somber (if familiar) note when it appears as if Captain Picard is dead. While investigating this presumed tragedy, Riker is kidnapped and spirited away to an outlaw ship that has been looting other planets. His outrage turns to shock and disillusionment when he finds Picard among the mercenaries. While the answer to Picard's behavior is provided during part one of "Gambit," viewers would have to wait until the following week to witness the outcome of the story, which was written by Christopher Hatton and Naren Shankar. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
In the first part of this episode, a captive Riker learned to his horror that Picard had joined a band of mercenaries who looted galactic archeology sites and sold their ill-gotten gains to the highest bidder. By the time part two rolled around, both Riker and the audience had been assured that Picard was merely posing as an outlaw to prevent the villains from getting their hands on a dangerous Vulcan artifact. Likewise pretending to cast his lot with the looters, Riker assists Picard in his efforts, which may well result in death for both men. Written by Ronald D. Moore from a story by Naren Shankar, part two of "Gambit" originally aired October 23, 1993. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Lisa is nearly killed when a bomb causes her car to explode, and many on the film begin to wonder if Monica's jealousy has begun to spin into homicidal madness.
