Jason London stars in this teen wish fulfillment romantic comedy, playing Todd Boomer, a would-be cartoonist who needs a recommendation to Harvard from his smarmy math teacher (Christopher MacDonald). However, calculus is the one subject in which Todd isn't pulling his weight. One rainy night he picks up a woman stranded by the side of the road who needs a ride (Tia Carrere). The woman turns out to be a whiz in his rusty subject, and she begins tutoring him. Only later does he start to fall for her -- and only later does he realize she's the wife of his math teacher. Although they begin a tentative affair, both are constantly worried about being discovered, which could ruin each in different ways. Meanwhile, Todd runs afoul of his own doting girlfriend, Kirsten (Alexondra Lee), as well as his best friend Paul (Zak Orth), who has a crush on Kirsten. The happy trio is splintered by Todd's romantic dalliances. My Teacher's Wife uses Todd's drawings, actually inked by cartoonist Bill Plympton, as loose narration. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Charlie (Matthew Fox) is outraged when the parents of his ex-fiancee Kirsten Bennett (Paula Devicq) storm into town after Claudia (Lacey Chabert) informs them of Kirsten's current emotional turmoil. Even worse, Mr. Bennett (Nicholas Pryor) holds Charlie completely responsible for the fact that Kirsten has lost her prestigious job and been booted from the PhD program--and he intends to take legal action against the Salingers. Elsewhere, Julia begins having second thoughts about attending Dartmouth; and while celebrating their "independence" from their families, roommates Bailey (Scott Wolf) and Callie (Alexondra Lee) drink a wee bit too much liquor...a "harmless" indulgence that will have negative repercussions in the weeks to come. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and served as co-producer for this screen adaptation of his short novel, which takes a witty but bittersweet look at a young woman and the two men involved with her. Mirabelle Buttersfield (Claire Danes) is an aspiring artist in her mid-twenties who, after graduating from college, moved to Los Angeles, where she works at the glove counter of an upscale department store. Mirabelle's job is simple and not demanding, but it doesn't pay especially well, and she finds herself struggling to get out from under a growing mountain of debt from student loans and credit cards. One night, while doing her laundry, Mirabelle meets Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman), a scruffy but likable would-be musician who makes ends meet selling guitar amps. While Jeremy is obviously infatuated with Mirabelle, she isn't sure how she feels about him, especially after she meets Ray Porter (Steve Martin), a man in his fifties whom she meets at the store. Ray is independently wealthy, intelligent, and charming, and after asking her out on a date he sweeps her off her feet. However, while Mirabelle quickly falls for Ray and he's generous to a fault with her, he refuses to commit exclusively to her and suggests they should both see other people, a prospect that no longer holds much appeal for her. A man finds himself getting an unexpected crash course in the psychology of contemporary women in this romantic comedy. Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a successful advertising executive living in Chicago who has long fancied himself a ladies' man, though he has precious little understanding of women beyond figuring out how to seduce them. One day, Nick receives a substantial electric shock in an accident in his bathroom; while he's not seriously injured, when he comes to, he discovers something remarkable has happened -- he can suddenly hear what women are thinking. At first, Nick finds himself learning all sorts of things he didn't want to know, but he also realizes how this can be used to his advantage -- especially after his old boss, Dan Wanamaker (Alan Alda) is replaced by a woman, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). But Nick begins to feel differently about his unusual gift when he discovers Darcy is infatuated with him, and he finds himself falling for her.
