This is the third film based on Tom Clancy's high-tech espionage potboilers starring CIA deputy director Jack Ryan. Harrison Ford, returning to the Ryan role after his first go-round in 1992's Patriot Games, is assigned to a delicate anti-drug investigation after a close friend of the President (a Reaganesque Donald Moffat) is murdered by a Colombian drug cartel. When Ryan discovers that the President's wealthy friend was in league with the cartel, the President's devious national security adviser (Harris Yulin) and an ambitious CIA deputy director (Henry Czerny) send a secret paramilitary force into Colombia to wipe out the drug lords. The force is captured and then abandoned by the President's lackeys. It falls to Ryan to enter Colombia and rescue them, aided only by a renegade operative named Clark (Willem Dafoe), with both his life and career on the line. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

This wacky buddy comedy was the fifth in a series of Hollywood remakes of films by French director Francis Veber, none of which were box office successes. Sheila Kelley is Valerie Highsmith, an heiress who, despite her family's wealth, suffers from horribly bad luck. On a vacation to Mexico, she takes a fall, causing amnesia, then is mugged and kidnapped for ransom. When her father (Sam Wanamaker) becomes frustrated with the failed attempts of a detective, Ray Campanella (Danny Glover) to find his daughter, he teams a very reluctant Ray with Eugene Proctor (Martin Short), an accountant whose bumbling bad luck is even worse than Valerie's. The theory is that perhaps two such incredibly unlucky people will act like magnets, with Eugene leading Ray to Valerie's location. Although Ray finds Eugene irritating, the unlikely partners eventually begin making surprising progress in the case, despite Eugene's never-ending screw-ups and pratfalls. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Steve Railsback, the star of the cult favorite The Stunt Man, carries the ball in Assassin. Railsback plays a CIA agent, assigned to protect a senator. When the politician is killed, the principal suspect is Our Hero. Left to his own devices, Railsback unearths one of those government conspiracies so beloved of quickie filmmakers. While the plot of Assassin is as full of holes as the senator, the action highlights are fine and dandy. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In Central America, the peasants are nearly all "Indios," or people whose cultural values are those of indigenous people (rather than European or Spanish). Since the landowning and propertied classes abuse them horribly, these same ruling-class types live in perpetual fear of a bloody uprising. As a result, they suppress and abuse the peasants even more. Ironically, for the most part these peaceable people only want to be left alone. Those who do want to foment revolution have virtually no weapons and few allies to help them. In this action/adventure movie, based on a true incident, a group of Guatemalan peasants who have sought refuge in Mexico are sought out by Guatemalan death squads, and those who aren't tortured and killed are taken away in captivity. The hero in the story is a Mexican hunter whose family is mistakenly included in the raid and who teams up with a few of the survivors to win his family back and take revenge. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Based on the song Mack the Knife, the very popular Rubén Blades song Pedro Navajas was the inspiration for a very popular Mexican movie taking the song name as its title, about a pimp and prostitute whose love/hate relationship resulted in their mutual destruction. In this sequel, their son develops into a defender of women. Raised in the U.S., the lad comes to Mexico when he hears his mother has died and attempts to look for his father. He is shocked to discover that he, too, has died. He is motivated to learn how to use a switchblade with uncanny skill, and earns for himself the sobriquet "Navajas," or "Blades." ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

In this cautionary tale, based on a novel by Luis Spota, the travails of four "wetbacks" are told. These men have left their homes throughout Mexico in order to sell their labor north of the Border in the U.S. Along the way, one dies while crossing the Rio Grande, another is deported, a third is killed, and the remaining one suffers horribly while working in the U.S. Indeed, such illegal Mexican immigrants are routinely abused and roughed-up, in addition to being poorly paid for back-breaking labor. However, in this movie at least, the lead characters are not particularly admirable people, as they are prepared to rob the only person who shows them kindness. This is clearly a movie with one simple, overriding theme for its intended viewers: no matter what, stay at home in Mexico. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Add Salvador to QueueAdd Salvador to top of Queue
While Salvador wasn't Oliver Stone's first film (a pair of offbeat horror stories preceded it), it defined his style of fiercely dramatic, politically oriented filmmaking, staked out his territory as one of the major directors of the 1980s and 1990s, and remains one of his strongest works to date. Veteran photojournalist Richard Boyle (James Woods) has been taking his camera to the world's trouble spots for over 20 years; while he does good work, Boyle's fondness for booze and drugs, and his colossal arrogance, have given him a reputation that's left him practically unemployable. Broke and with no immediate prospects, Boyle and his buddy Doctor Rock (Jim Belushi), an out-of-work disc jockey, head to El Salvador, where Boyle is convinced that he can scare up some lucrative freelance work amidst the nation's political turmoil. However, when Boyle and Rock witness the execution of a student by government troops just as they enter the country, it becomes clear that this war is more serious than they were expecting. Increasingly convinced that El Salvador is a disaster starting to happen, Boyle eventually decides that it's time to get out; but he has fallen in love with a woman named Maria (Elpidia Carrillo), and he doesn't want to leave her behind. James Woods gives one of his best performances as Boyle; and the passion of Stone's message, aided by the power of its truth (the film is based on actual events), propels the film forward. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
