Chris (voice of Seth Green) wants out of the Scouts, and no wonder, with a Scout leader who always calls the troop "girls," and who shrieks at Chris for sitting outside the semicircle. Chris would rather devote his time to drawing, but he doesn't have the heart to tell Peter (voice of Seth MacFarlane). Peter is so psyched about Chris being a Scout that he even builds him a go-cart for the soap-box derby. Surprisingly, Speed Racer turns out to be one of Chris' opponents. The race ends (well, starts) disastrously, and Chris is kicked out of the troop. But Peter refuses to take it lying down, getting the family into the car for a drive to the Scouts' main office in New York. Brian (MacFarlane) stays behind, explaining that he's been to New York, and "it's like Prague, without the whimsy." Peter gets lost en route, and a bathroom emergency brings the family to Geronimo's Palace, a Native American casino. While Peter uses the bathroom, Lois (voice of Alex Borstein) wanders over to video poker, where a casino worker reassures her, "Technically, it's not really gambling; it's just us trying to rebuild our shattered culture after you raped our land and defiled our women." Lois gives it a try, and has soon gambled away the car (shades of Lost in America, which the creators acknowledge on the DVD commentary). Peter tries to get the family's money back by claiming to be part Native American. The council of elders decides that he must go on a "vision quest," a spiritual journey into the wilderness without food, water, or shoes, to prove his ancestry. Chris goes along, hoping for an opportunity to tell Peter that he doesn't want to be a Scout. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Peter's (voice of Seth MacFarlane) crusty old father, Francis (voice of Charles Durning), retires from Pawtucket Mills after 60 years. Francis is not exactly close to the family (he wanted Peter to marry a Catholic girl), but when Peter invites him to move in, he agrees. Stewie (voice of Seth MacFarlane) immediately adores the old tyrant, and takes to reading the Bible, but the rest of the family doesn't appreciate his domineering religiosity. "I didn't even know there was a 5:00 a.m. mass," says Chris (voice of Seth Green) one morning. "I didn't even know there was a 5:00 a.m." Peter claims the Bible is read in his house, but when Francis asks what his favorite book of it is, he fudges, "the one where Jesus swallows the puzzle piece and the man in the big yellow hat has to take him to the hospital?" Francis chastises Meg (voice of Lacey Chabert) for holding hands with the boy next door, and mistakes Chris' innocent trip to the bathroom for self-abuse. He even disapproves of the family watching The Dick Van Dyke Show. But things really get bad when Peter gets his father a job at his own place of employment, the toy factory. Francis' hard work quickly earns him a job as shop foreman. He's a tyrant, and when Peter tries to stand up to him, he gets fired. But Peter comes up with a "crazy idea" to resolve things. It involves kidnapping the Pope. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Lisa Simpson (voice of Yeardley Smith) learns that ground will soon be broken for a new shopping mall in Sabretooth Meadows, a part of Springfield where rare fossils have been uncovered in the past. Eager to see if more can be discovered, Lisa asks the developers permission for Springfield Elementary's students to organize a dig on the grounds before construction starts. They agree, and to the surprise of all, a strange skeleton is uncovered -- one with the body of a human, but with what appears to be wings growing from its back. While many townspeople are convinced the remains of an angel has been found -- including Homer (voice of Dan Castellaneta), who steals the remain and puts them on display in his garage -- Lisa is convinced there's a scientific explanation for the strange find, and asks Stephen Jay Gould to look into the matter. However, the next day the skeleton disappears and is discovered at the top of a hill, emblazoned with the legend "The End Is Near." As Springfield's residents ponder the meaning of this ominous statement, the matter divides the Simpson household, with Lisa standing on the side of science and reason while her mother Marge (voice of Julie Kavner) expresses her belief in the spiritual world. "Lisa The Skeptic" first aired on November 23, 1997. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

After his hippie parents are killed in a botched drug deal, a child is taken in by a bag lady in this implausible drama. Wild Thing (Rob Knepper) grows up to be the champion of street justice, espousing a 1960s philosophy and coming to the aid of the helpless and oppressed. Jane (Kathleen Quinlan) is the concerned social worker who falls for the hero. The hit song Wild Thing by the Troggs is used often but has nothing to do with the story or the hero being portrayed. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

The title of this David Cronenberg sci-fi horror film refers to a group of people who have telekinetic powers that allow them to read minds and give them the ability to make other people's heads explode. The children of a group of women who took an experimental tranquilizer during their pregnancies, the scanners are now adults and have become outcasts from society. But Darryl (Michael Ironside) decides to create an army of scanners to take over the world. The only person who can stop him is his brother Cameron (Stephen Lack), who wants to forget that he was ever a scanner. Winner of the International Fantasy Film Award at the 1983 Fantasporto Film Festival, Scanners was followed by a pair of sequels, neither of which involved Cronenberg. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

It's Valentine's Day in the tiny mining town of Valentine's Bluff, Nova Scotia, and for the first time in two decades the residents are planning a holiday dance. The long hiatus is due to the tragic events of 20 years earlier, when a pair of mining supervisors were too busy enjoying themselves at the dance to prevent an accident from killing a large contingent of their workers. The lone survivor, Harry Warden, took his revenge the next year by removing the hearts of his bosses and promising similar carnage if ever another Valentine's dance were held. Unfortunately, the town's horny early-'80s youngsters aren't big on tradition, especially since Warden is locked up in an insane asylum. They go ahead with plans to celebrate the holiday -- even after a heart in a candy box shows up and beloved biddy Mabel (Patricia Hamilton) ends up enduring an involuntary tumble dry. Soon, bodies begin piling up, setting the stage for a climactic trawl through the mines and surprise revelations about the fate of Harry Warden. Shortly after the death of John Lennon, the MPAA made an example of this Canadian slasher film, forcing much of its gore to be excised. Nevertheless, My Bloody Valentine provided inspiration for Kevin Shields' influential band of the same name, which helped establish England's late-'80s shoegazer sound and paved the way for the post-rock of the 1990s. ~ Brian J. Any comedy should be suspect when the lead character, in this case Benjamin Browning, is played both by an actor (Chevy Chase) and a lovable dog (Benji). Private eye Browning is in London tracking down a sexual scandal in British political circles when he is murdered. His karma is canine in form and gets him rebirth as a dog. Fortunately for him, the dog's owner is Jackie Howard (Jane Seymour), a magazine reporter who does not realize that there is a rather lustful man inside her innocent pooch. Benji supplies the few moments of humor in this uneven film. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
