This condensed version of the Mexican telenovela series centers around identical triplets Maria Guadalupe, Maria Paula, and Maria Fernanda - whose uncanny resemblance to one another betrays the fact that they all possess deeply disparate personalities. When the triplets were just young girls, their parents were killed in a tragic car accident. Later, Maria Guadalupe falls down a mountain and into a river. Though she is believed to be dead, Maria Guadalupe is still very much alive. She's being raised by Ana Sales, who is still struggling with her own mother's death and who vows to raise the child as her own - even after discovering the truth about her identity. Meanwhile, Maria Fernanda has been rendered blind in an accident, and refuses to give up hope that her sibling somehow survived her treacherous fall. The most glamorous of the three sisters is Maria Paula, though her outward radiance masks a deep selfishness. Maria Paula always has to be the center of attention, especially when she's around her uncle Eduardo and grandmother Mercedes. When Maria Guadalupe and Ana arrive in Mexico City to seek treatment for an illness, the amnesiac sister falls for a handsome and kindhearted cab driver named Nicolas, who has just moved to the city to live with his grandfather. Though Ana tries her best to conceal Maria Guadalupe's true identity by restricting the actions of the young girl, Nicolas' grandfather knows the truth. Before long, the lives of all three sisters converge in Mexico City, drawing the people around them together in a manner that no one could have foreseen. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

German "Tin Tan" Valdez, Loco Valdez, Resortes, and Clavillazo headline this classic Mexican horror comedy concerning a pair of sideshow scam artists who discover that the supernatural realm may be for real after a pair of mischievous ghosts land them in hot water. Resortes, and Clavillazo operate under P.T. Barnum's creed about a sucker being born every minute, and earn a tidy profit by faking their connection to the spirit realm at a low-rent carnival. Later, when a pair of poltergeists wreck havoc on the carnival and the police blame the shenanigans on the carnie con artists, the situation quickly gets out of hand. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A simple and tragic situation is deftly developed in this family tragedy by director Julian Soler. Unlike the melodramas common to Mexican cinema, this story about the dying son of loving parents shies away from exaggeration -- there is no need for it. The mother in the family (Marga Lopez) is in anguish over her son's illness, knowing that he will die slowly and painfully, with no possible cure or reprieve in sight. Her husband shares her feelings and between the two of them, they have to come to a decision as to whether they should end their son's life peacefully or keep him alive until a more agonizing, natural death claims him. In the end, it is the mother that has to ultimately make the decision. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Acclaimed director Luis Buñuel displays several of his trademark interests in this drama about a priest who leaves his order. The director's disdain for organized religion and the establishment, as well as his tendency to shock through visual imagery, are both apparent. Nazarin (Francisco Rabal) is the priest who leaves his order and decides to go on a pilgrimage. As he goes along subsisting on alms, he shelters a prostitute wanted by the police for murder. He is released from suspicion and she eventually catches up with him when she escapes imprisonment. Another woman joins the duo and soon the ex-priest is learning more about the human heart and suffering than when he wore robes. As for the shocking scenes, suffice to say the ravages of a plague are also shown. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The English-language title of this Mexican social drama is Boy's Town; the mood and texture of the film was obviously influenced by the 1938 Hollywood production of the same name. Arturo de Cordova stars as the real-life Padre Farias, who overcomes great obstacles to establish a Latin-American "boy's town" for wayward and neglected youth. The kids chosen to portray the Padre's charges are refreshingly natural and unaffected; also worthy of praise is the film's excellent location cinematography, courtesy of director Gilberto Martinez Solares' brother Augustin. As a bonus, the storyline's religious angle never overwhelms its entertainment value (and vice versa). La Ciudad de Los Ninos premiered at the 1957 San Sebastian Film Festival. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The English-language title of this Mexican musical was The Third Word. Singer Pedro Infante stars as a pampered young man who is sheltered by his doting aunts. Deciding that their darling boy needs an education, the ladies hire pretty schoolteacher Marga Lopez. Upon discovering that her pupil is 28 years old, Marga is momentarily nonplused, but then settles into her duties. Inevitably, romance blossoms between Pedro and Marga, much to the aunts' dismay. The fact that Pedro Infante had won the Mexican equivalent of the Oscar in 1955 hurt the box-office prospects of La Terera Palabra not in the slightest. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This Mexican melodrama was released above the border as After the Storm. The principal characters are a pair of twin lighthouse keepers. They try their best to live together with their wives under the same roof, but the delicate balance is shattered when one of the brothers falls in love with his sister-in-law. When one twin is lost during a storm, the other assumes his identity, with the expected romantic complications. If Despues de la Termenta sounds familiar, it is because the screenplay was inspired by the 1946 Bette Davis vehicle A Stolen Life. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
