A man isn't about to give up on winning the woman he loves in this romantic drama from veteran Canadian filmmaker John N. Smith. It's 1969, and Michael (Allan Hawco) is a student of poetry and geology from Newfoundland who travels to Ireland to explore some unusual mineral formations in County Clare. Michael is staying at a small inn when he meets Kathleen (Sarah Greene), a beautiful young woman who works at a neighborhood pub. Michael is immediately drawn to Kathleen, but he learns her parents died when she was young, and in accordance with her mother's final wish she plans to join a convent in the near future. This doesn't change Michael's feelings for Kathleen, and he's certain she's attracted to him as well, but some of the townspeople strongly disapprove of Michael's efforts to woo her, and a few react with violence; the sentiment against Michael grows when he and Kathleen go out for the afternoon and a sudden storm leaves them stranded together over night, with many imagining the worst of him. Love and Savagery received its world premiere at the 2009 Montreal World Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Sixty-five years after making his screen debut as a young stoker in co-directors Noël Coward and David Lean's World War II drama In Which We Serve, Richard Attenborough perfects the balance between epic story and intimate tale with this drama starring Shirley MacLaine and Neve Campbell as a mother and daughter who find a relic from the past sparking an incendiary series of events. The year is 1991, and as a small American town mourns the passing of beloved World War II veteran Chuck Harris, his wife Ethel (MacLaine) numbs herself with alcohol to the point where she completely neglects her grieving daughter Marie (Campbell). Later, after Marie receives a telephone call from a boy in Northern Ireland who claims to have recently discovered a ring belonging to Ethel, a mystery nearly five decades in the making comes slowly into focus as the story drifts back into Chuck's wartime past and the days when he and Ethel first formed their powerful bond. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The residents of Wilby, Nova Scotia, learn the importance a day can make as scandal weighs heavily on their conscience in the sophomore feature from Canadian playwright-turned-filmmaker Daniel MacIvor. Suicidal Dan Jarvis (James Allodi) is longing to find a reason to live, and as Buddy and Carol Franch's (Paul Gross and Sandra Oh) marriage falls to pieces, single mom Sandra Anderson (Rebecca Jenkins) seeks male companionship to relieve the strain of raising a child alone and unlucky painter Duck MacDonald (Callum Keith Rennie) struggles to overcome his own nagging problems. On the horizon, a shocking revelation threatens to change the way the residents of the small town view both themselves and their neighbors, but how will the people of Wilby deal with such a major problem when they can't even work out their own issues? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
