This in-depth, feature length documentary explores the controversial life of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Often dismissed as a happy folk hero, Williams was in fact often frustrated and unhappy with both his small town life and his obligations to care for his invalid wife. Exploring both his musical and personal legacy, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the artist. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

Directed by Richard Trank and narrated by Ben Kingsley, Unlikely Heroes revolves around the largely untold tales of Jewish heroism during the Nazi regime. The film is supplemented with touching personal artifacts and rare footage from the Holocaust era, most of which was found in an extensive search throughout various European archives. Though much of the credit for the decline of Adolph Hitler rightfully falls on the shoulders of the worldwide military effort to defeat him, Unlikely Heroes offers members of the Jewish resistance a chance to discuss their personal contributions to ending -- and occasionally merely surviving -- one of the most violent periods in history. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Leos Janacek's well-known opera Jenufa is the story of the maiden Jenufa. The pregnant Jenufa is not allowed to marry Steva until he stops drinking, but when Steva finds out about the baby, he refuses to marry her anyway. Kostelnicka, Jenufa's step-mother, tries to arrange a marriage with Steva's brother, Laca, and, in so doing, tells Laca that the baby is dead. She drowns the infant while Jenufa is sleeping. The opera is sung in Czech. The London Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Andrew Davis, and features the Glydebourne Chorus. ~ Alice Day, All Movie Guide
Ben Kingsley stars as celebrated Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich in this lengthy historical biography. Along with Prokofiev, Shostakovich is considered among the elite of the 20th-century composers to emerge from his country. Striving to be true to his art form, the composer was caught in the political crossfire of the Stalin regime and was criticized for being politically ambiguous. Under constant pressure, Shostakovich silenced many of his critics when he remained in Leningrad during the Nazi siege to complete his stirring 7th symphony. Terrence Rigby plays Stalin, with Ronald Pickup as the ill-fated Soviet official Tukhachevsky, another of Stalin's many victims. Shostakovich lived until 1975. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his comic opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) in 1782. The three-act piece concerns Belmonte's attempts - with the help of his servant Pedrillo - to liberate his paramour, Constanze, from the seraglio, or the sequestered living quarters of the Pasha Selim, the Ottoman ruler. The Glyndebourne Festival Opera staged Entführung in 1980, with a cast that included Ryland Davies as Belmonte, Valerie Masterson as Constanze, and James Hoback as Pedrillo; a filmed record of that production is now available in this home release. The Glyndebourne Chorus and The London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Gustav Kuhn, provide musical accompaniment, with Peter Wood in charge of the stage production. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
