Aimed for both children and adults, this slapstick crime comedy chronicles the further adventures of Augustin Marleau, the protagonist from the 1991 film The Killer Played Trombone. As in the first film, aspiring actor Marleau (Germain Houde) is still a luckless loser. While performing in a television commercial, the psychotic and wheel-chair bound Elkin (Marc Labreche) shows up and tries to shoot him. Soon afterward Marleau's old nemesis Inspector Grasselli (Raymond Bouchard) shows up to arrest Marleau for the kidnapping of some wealthy captains of industry. Grasselli doesn't have a shred of evidence linking Marleau to the crimes, but that doesn't stop him from his obsession with incarcerating Marleau. Then there is Elkin's gang, several black-clad women who stalk and torment Marleau at every turn. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

First-time producer, director and writer Louise Carre takes the perspective of the lead character Adele (Charlotte Boisjoli), who is a recently widowed, 57-year-old woman, and applies it to the circumstances that shape her life. Adele starts to experience the loneliness of her years when her husband dies and her children have all left home. Coping with an empty house could be a losing proposition, and so she takes on a boarder, Germain (Jacques Galipeau), to help with the finances and to alleviate the silence. She even dyes her hair in a reassessment of her slowly changing identity. Eventually, she sees her boarder in a different light and starts to fall in love again. Adele is now more attentive to her own rights than was possible as a full-time mother and wife, and she has started to modify her role as a completely dependent woman. The relationship with Germain continues as she works on a balance between her needs and those of the new man in her life. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The Canadian "sleeper" The Silent Partner stars Elliott Gould as a teller, Miles Cullen, who figures out psycho Harry Reikle's (Christopher Plummer) scheme to rob his bank, several days ahead of time. Cullen providently squirrels away 50,000 dollars in a safety-deposit box before Reikle strikes. After the robbery, the papers report the amount of the bank's loss. Reikle realizes that there's 50,000 extra bucks floating around that he hasn't gotten his hands on. The soft-spoken but sadistic Reikle puts the screws on Cullen to fork over the dough -- but Cullen has lost the deposit-box key. Be forewarned: this one gets extremely brutal and bloody at times, with sudden bursts of graphic violence. Also featured is Susannah York as the fluctuating-loyalty heroine, and a very young and hairy John Candy. Future L.A. Confidential scribe Curtis Hanson loosely adapted the Danish novel Think of a Number, by Anders Bodelsen. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This Canadian nailbiter was originally sent out under the title The Plague. Both titles are appropos: the plague is M3, aka the Gemini Strain, aka a deadly virus. Released accidentally, M3 cuts a swath of death and disease around the world. Scientist Daniel Pilon races against time to develop an antidote. The flawless performances of Pilon and his costar Kate Reid more than compensate for The Plague's lack of production polish. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this early work from director Denys Arcand (Jesus of Montreal), Vincent Padovani (Jean Lajeunesse) is a French-Canadian contractor whose new superhighway is about to open. At a party he throws with the local money-men and political honchos, Padovani willingly indulges in the sort of debauchery that is permissible only in the highest social circles. The revelry is interrupted -- briefly -- when the ex-wife of the highway financier turns up; the financier's bodyguards promptly rub her out and have her body dumped in cement...and by film's end, the unfortunate woman winds up a left turn on Padovani's highway. The anti-establishment ambience of Réjeanne Padovani has a bite-the-hand-that-feeds-you feel, inasmuch as the film was financed by a government grant. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this Canadian comedy, a scion of conservative wealth finds himself stranded at a remote hippie commune. Multiple deceptions and many sexual escapades take place, though the film is not explicitly pornographic. This film was a hit with Canadian audiences when it was released, as it takes satiric jabs at everyone: the wealthy and conservative classes, antiwar protestors, and hippies. It even twits the sexual mores of the times. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

A young woman falls for a married French professor in romantic Montreal. The two spend days together in a hotel and tour the city before he returns to his wife. The woman goes back to her boyfriend who carried on his own affair in her absence. There is enough nudity and adult situations to satisfy flesh-feature fans, but the film is not an overt exploitation feature. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide
