To the millions who tune in to get their music information from MTV, he's the solemn voice who has delivered the good, the bad, and the ugly on celebrities. News correspondent Kurt Loder has withstood the obnoxious Jesse Camp trend, the out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new trend, and everything in between. Loder started at MTV in 1988 as anchor of the music news program The Week in Rock, which evolved into 1515, and has covered various teen-culture topics such as drug abuse and neo-Nazi bands. Not to be pigeonholed as merely a spouter of news reports, Loder has also interviewed everyone from Madonna to the Who. Raised in New Jersey, he spent three years in the U.S. Army and, before coming back to the States, was a journalist in Europe. After his return, he wrote for Circus Magazine in the late '70s and then spent nine years as a writer/senior editor at Rolling Stone, to which he still contributes. Loder has also written for Esquire, Details, and Time. He also does daily news reports for MTV Radio Network. The result of his writing talents not only earned him a New York Times best-seller, but a major motion picture as well. His biography on the tempestuous life of Tina Turner during her years with abusive husband Ike, I, Tina, was the basis for the movie What's Love Got to Do With It starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. He has also written liner notes for the 1990 Led Zeppelin box set and the various-artists We Will Fall: The Iggy Pop Tribute, among others, and has played himself in a few movies, including Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and Airheads. ~ Rachel Sprovtsoff-Mangus, All Movie Guide

One of the most financially successful independent films of all time spawns a sequel that at once honors and confronts the pseudo-documentary style of the original in this follow-up to The Blair Witch Project. After The Blair Witch Project becomes a box-office smash, tourists begin to descend upon the small town of Burkittsville, MD, wanting to learn more about the truth and legend of the Blair Witch. Jeff Patterson is a local resident with a checkered past who sees a chance to make some fast money; he inaugurates "The Blair Witch Hunt," offering a tour of the woods where the ill-starred student filmmakers were lost. Four students from Boston sign up for the witch hunt, and end up spending the night camping near the home of notorious child murderer Rustin Parr. The next morning, they discover that they have no memory of a five-hour stretch of the previous night; as the day wears on, they realize they encountered something profoundly evil during their lost night in the woods, which has begun to manifest itself with a vengeance. Two bored suburban kids looking for something to do get trapped in the wrong kind of excitement in this independent drama. Stevie (Cameron Van Hoy) is a boy in his early teens, depressed and out of sorts, who half-heartedly attempts suicide without having the wherewithal to go the whole nine yards. When his girlfriend Rocky (Mischa Barton) shows up on her way to school, Stevie has just found his mother's gun while poking around the house. As they head off for class, Stevie brings the pistol along. They pass a bank along the way, and Stevie impulsively dashes in and decides to rob the place. Before Stevie and Rocky can get away, police and FBI agents arrive on the scene, and Stevie announces he's taking the customers inside the bank hostage. FBI negotiator Daniel Bender (Burt Reynolds) is sent to the scene of the crime; while it's quickly obvious to him that these are two kids pulling a prank that got out of hand, they're also armed and in the middle of a very dangerous situation, and Stevie's bursts of adolescent rage aren't making things run any smoother. Financed by a Japanese production company but written, directed, and starring American talent, Pups had its premier screening at the 1999 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival -- only two days before two armed high school students went on a tragic killing spree in Littleton, CO. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Director Ron Howard's drama follows a beleaguered reporter during a hectic 24 hours at a New York City tabloid. Michael Keaton stars as Henry Hackett, a metro editor for the struggling New York Sun. Hackett is being wooed by the Sentinel, a more upscale paper, but he's addicted to the adrenaline-stimulating, breakneck pace of the Sun's newsroom, much to the consternation of his pregnant wife Martha (Marisa Tomei. Hackett is currently pursuing a story of two minority youths who have been arrested for the murders of two men. He learns that the police think that the killings may be a mob hit. In the court of public opinion, however, the innocent suspects are being judged as guilty, and the police may bow to the pressure. As Hackett and his staff desperately work all the story's angles to find the truth, several other dramas unfold. Top editor Bernie (Robert Duvall) learns that he has prostate cancer, and tough publisher Alicia (Glenn Close) wonders if her lack of popularity is due to her cost-cutting, her personality, or the fact that she's a woman. Airheads is a variation on Dog Day Afternoon, as well as a comic look at the trials and tribulations of both the music business and Generation X. A hapless rock trio consisting of Chazz (Brendan Fraser), Rex (Steve Buscemi), and Pip (Adam Sandler) hits a brick wall with their attempts to get their demo tape played by record label executives. Chazz, on the edge since being thrown out by his girlfriend (Amy Locane), decides it's time to take more serious action, and he leads his bandmates on a mission to invade the local "alternative" rock station, KPPX, and hold it hostage to get the band's tape played on the air. The station staffers don't realize that they're being held with a water gun, and when they finally agree to play the tape, it gets eaten up by a faulty machine. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

In this comedy, bumbling Harlem barbers Dr. Dre and Ed Lover are shipped off to the police academy by their frustrated boss, Nick (Jim Moody). What's Love Got to Do With It? is the filmed biography of R&B/pop singer Tina Turner (Angela Bassett), documenting her efforts to break away from her abusive husband Ike (Laurence Fishburne). After a few scenes detailing Tina's life as a young singer in Nutbush, TN, she's discovered by Ike Turner, an already established songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Controversial and often offensive stand-up comedian Andrew Dice Clay made his debut as a feature film star in this crude comedy. Fairlane is a "rock and roll detective" who works in the music business, has an office on Sunset Boulevard, and drives a 1957 Ford, with clothing to match. He floats through the rock clubs of Hollywood, picking up women and clients, and soon stumbles into a case involving the death of a heavy metal singer, a corrupt music executive (Wayne Newton), the murder of a radio shock-jock (Gilbert Gottfried), and the kidnapping of the jock's daughter (Maddie Corman). Music stars like Sheila E. and Motley Crue singer Vince Neil also have cameos in the film, which attempts to transplant Clay's aggressively obnoxious stage persona into a movie environment. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide
