A favorite of the church-basement and kiddie-matinee circuit, Heidi und Peter is a sequel to the 1952 adaptation of Johann Spyri's Heidi. The youthful protagonists are herein played by Elsbeth Sigmund and Thomas Klameth. Peter comes to visit Heidi while recuperating from an illness. He gets well in a hurry as he and Heidi embark upon all sorts of exciting adventures. The film's climax takes place in an oversized thunderstorm as Heidi and Peter try to safely negotiate a treacherous mountain. It's perhaps best to see Heidi und Peter in a subtitled version; the voices on the English-dubbed prints are obviously supplied by adults. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The English-language title of this German musical is Secretly, Quietly and Softly. Essentially, this is an "inventory" film, spotlighting the tunes written by popular early 20th-century composer Paul Linke. Providing continuity to the musical highlights is a gossamer-thin plotline concerning an amorous opera diva. When the heroine's servant decides to "tell all" to a gossip magazine, all sorts of embarrassing complications ensue. Greti Schrog and Hans Nielsen are in fine voice as the opera star and her lover, while Theo Lingen makes a superb comic villain as the duplicitous servant. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Unlike previous adaptations of the Johanna Spyri children's classic, this 1952 English-language version of Heidi was lensed on location in Switzerland. Elsbeth Sigmund plays the title character, who endures all sorts of hardships and setbacks before finding happiness in the form of her ex-curmudgeon grandfather (top-billed Heinrich Gretler). Isa Gunther co-stars as the crippled girl whom Heidi befriends; with her twin sister, Guenther had previously starred in the successful German farce Two Times Lotte(1950), which served as the inspiration for the 1961 Disney film The Parent Trap. Thanks to the built-in popularity of the Spyri original, Heidi managed good international booking even before it was finished. The film was the fourth effort by Praesens Productions, which had previously struck box-office gold with Four in a Jeep(1951). It was directed by Italy's Luigi Comencini, a specialist in films featuring wise-beyond-their-years children. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This postwar Austrian musical harks back to happier prewar times. Yugoslavian-born singing favorite Elfie Mayerhoffer essays a dual role, playing twin sisters separated at birth. Yes, that's right: one of the girls, Viktoria by name, is brought up in wealth and privilege, while her sister Lily is raised in genteel poverty. With the help and support of her kindly foster father, Lily becomes a popular singer, leading to a wonderful reunion with Viktoria. But before this happens, Lily and Viktoria's respective suitors find themselves in the midst of a comedy of errors. Despite its lighthearted ambience, Vienna Melodies injects a note of reality into the proceedings by staging its exterior scenes against the actual, war-ravaged Vienna of 1947. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Elfie Mayerhofer, Johannes Heesters, (more)
