Inspired by the epic Old English poem of the same name, director Robert Zemeckis's digitally rendered film follows the Scandinavian hero Beowulf (Ray Winstone) as he fights to protect the Danes from a ferocious beast named Grendel (Crispin Glover). Though at first Grendel seems invincible, Beowulf eventually manages to defeat him in a desperate battle to the death. Devastated by her son's violent demise at the hands of Beowulf, Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie) sets out in search of revenge. Later, Beowulf faces the biggest challenge of his life when he attempts to slay a powerful dragon. Blockbuster action director Michael Bay delivers a striking look at a strange world of the future in this sci-fi action drama. Midway through the 21st century, Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) lives in a confined indoor community after ongoing abuse of the Earth has rendered most of the planet uninhabitable. One of the only places in the outside world still capable of sustaining life is an idyllic island where citizens are chosen to live through a lottery. Or at least that's what Lincoln and his fellow citizens are taught to believe; the truth is that Lincoln, like everyone he knows, is actually a clone who is kept under wraps to provide needed organs when the person who supplied his or her DNA falls ill. When he becomes aware that his existence is a fraud, Lincoln escapes to the outside world with a fellow clone, Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson), though the powers that be are determined to see that no one gets away alive. The Island also stars Steve Buscemi, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Sean Bean. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

While most fans of the legendary Marilyn Monroe know of her well-publicized marriages to baseball star Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller, considerably fewer people know anything about her first husband. In June of 1942, 16-year-old Norma Jean Baker wed James Dougherty, a 21-year-old who worked at an aircraft assembly plant and had been dating her for about a year. In 1946, their marriage would end in divorce, and a year later Norma Jean would land her first film role, adopting the stage name Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn's Man is a documentary in which James Dougherty offers his memories and perspectives on the women who was his bride for four years, as well as revealing his thoughts on the career pressures and the unfortunate lure of stardom that helped transform Marilyn into one of the most famous women in the world, but did little to make her happy or fulfilled. Dougherty also discusses his life after he parted ways with Norma Jean, including his career with the Los Angeles Police Department and his role in establishing the nation's first SWAT team. Marilyn's Man was the first feature film for writer and director Schani Krug. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
