Directed by veteran Spanish helmer Vicente Aranda, Carmen revolves around a complex cast of characters, including Merimee (Jay Benedict), a writer and archeologist whose research in southern Spain circa 1830 brings him into contact with Jose (Leonardo Sbaraglia), a bandit. When Merimee meets the beautiful Carmen (Paz Vega) in a cathedral, Jose bursts in and orders Merimee to leave unless he wanted to be killed. Eventually, Jose reveals how he had met Carmen -- breaking up a fight between her and a co-worker who believed her to be a witch, and subsequently letting her off the hook rather than taking her to prison. When they next met, Carmen was working as a prostitute, which made Jose jealous enough to murder one of her clients. Afterwards, he dedicated his entire life to being with her, not caring who he killed along the way. The film also features Antonio Dechent, Joan Crosas, and Joe Mackay. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

The success of The Abyss led to slew of deep-sea adventures in 1989, including this silly monster movie from the director of Pieces and Slugs. Jack Scalia stars as the head of a rescue mission sent to retrieve a nuclear sub sunken off the coast of Norway, only to be menaced by phony-looking monsters and a ruthless corporate stooge (Ray Wise) trying to get everybody killed. Full Metal Jacket's R. Lee Ermey co-stars as another hard-bitten militarist, this time a ship captain, and the film features numerous poorly-done gore scenes including an exploding head and torn-off limbs. Deborah Adair is noteworthy as Scalia's ex, but the direction is poor and the monsters are likely to produce more in the way of sneers than cheers. An absolutely grotesque horror film based on the book by Shaun Hutson, this bloody shocker from Juan Piquer Simon (Pieces) is set in a small town in upstate New York but has a mostly European cast. Hordes of mutant flesh-eating slugs are having the citizenry for lunch until a trio of public officials takes action, as is standard procedure in the post-Jaws ecokill film. The gore is excessive and quite well-handled, particularly a scene in which two nude lovers are literally ripped to bloody bits in a bedroom full of slimy horrors, but otherwise the film is surprisingly uninvolving. Fans of gross-out cinema will still want to catch it for a scene in which a restaurant patron's eye blows out, revealing swarming baby slugs. Needless to say, such doings will not appeal to everyone. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

An amusing spoof of the good 'ole westerns back in the halcyon days when all the cliches were held up as icons, this parody by Hugh Wilson works best for savvy audiences. Rex O'Herlihan (Tom Berenger) is a singing cowboy with a wardrobe straight out of the Hollywood westerns of the '40s -- he worships his horse, and has a trusty sidekick too. Every town he wanders into has a sheriff on the dole, a shady cattle rancher, a prostitute with a heart of gold, an innocent young damsel, a town drunk, and the standard bad guys in black hats and long coats (Spaghetti-western style) who brutalize the poor sheep ranchers. After setting things straight in each identical town as he goes, Rex is beginning to feel like a re-run junky when he saunters into a town that is slightly different -- and the parodies continue. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This "monster dog" horror story stars Alice Cooper as Vincent, a rock musician. Vincent's troubles first start when he goes to his childhood home to shoot a music video with his girlfriend Sandra (Victoria Vera), who is the director. Soon after arriving several gruesome murders occur, apparently caused by a pack of wild dogs. About 20 years earlier, Vincent's father was killed by a mob when they blamed him for another series of murders. At that time, his father was accused of being a werewolf and since the current murders are similar to those perpetrated in his father's day, the townspeople suspect Vincent has inherited his father's canine genes. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this softcore sexploitation film by Paco Lara, Christina (Jewel Shepard) is the wealthy heiress to a publishing fortune, kidnapped by a variety of evil men or women who sexually use her as they wish and then pass her on to the next group, willingly or not. In-between the sex are some obviously fake martial arts battles between women, and a non-existent storyline which has Christina falling asleep at odd moments so dream sequences can be added to the pastiche. Parental guidance is in order. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
