A woman searches for her biological mother with her mind set on murder in this suspense thriller. Susan Miller (Andrea Roth) was born to an unwed mother who felt she would be unable to care for her properly; after being put up for adoption, Susan bounced from one set of abusive foster parents to another. Now grown to adulthood, Susan is beautiful on the outside, but inwardly has been twisted into a violent hatred of her mother, even serving time in a mental institution. Now free, Susan has vowed to track down the woman she believes abandoned her and get her revenge. Susan discovers her birth mother was Maggie Conner (Cindy Pickett), whose husband Jesse (Gil Gerard) operates a successful horse-breeding operation. Susan ingratiates herself with the Connor family, landing a job working at their ranch and moving into their home, but Maggie and Jesse's daughter Linda (Lisa Dean Ryan) senses there's something odd about Susan, and when she uncovers Susan's secret, the whole family is thrown deep into danger. The supporting cast includes Jaimz Woolvet, Matt Farnsworth, and Lee Dawson; director Peter Liapis appears in a supporting role as a plumber. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

In this taut psychological drama, Nick Mancuso plays Holden Downs, an unscrupulous real estate developer. Joey decides to get even by stealing Downs' luxurious sports car with the help of his brother Michael (Andrew Divoff). However, Downs is not willing to give up his car without a fight; he's fitted the vehicle with a variety of security devices and unusual weapons that make it a virtual torture chamber for anyone who sets foot in it without Downs' permission, and the car thieves quickly discover that they've become victims of the man they set out to rob. Captured was the directorial debut for actor Peter Liapis. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

For this third sequel to Charles Band's pointless but modestly successful Gremlins rip-off, the writers ignored the previous two installments and brought back the character of Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) from the original film, though inexplicably transforming him from a naïve dropout occultist to a streetwise cop. He is forced to do battle with his former girlfriend Alexandra (Stacie Randall), who has escaped from an asylum and is busily conducting human sacrifices in order to summon a demon once created by Jonathan's Satanic dabblings. The title creeps are shoved even further to the background than the previous chapters -- not a bad thing, really, since the effects department still hasn't managed to make them look like anything but inarticulate latex puppets covered in goo. Sadly, what's left is a tired cop-vs.-serial-killer scenario that's even less convincing than the monsters themselves. Z-movie journeyman (and Roger Corman favorite) Jim Wynorski injects the usual dose of titillation and B-movie in-jokes, with the expected results. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide

Joe Dante's box-office fantasy Gremlins had barely left American cinemas before Charles Band's B-movie factory, Empire Pictures, rushed out this cheap knockoff. While Dante's film benefited from the director's wry sense of humor and the high-concept clout of executive producer Steven Spielberg, Band's tawdry little creature feature boasts lower production values than a high-school haunted-house fundraiser. The title monsters are a pack of obnoxious demons -- enacted by a handful of rubber dolls covered with KY jelly -- summoned up by the metaphysical shenanigans of college student Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) after he discovers his late father's occult paraphernalia at the family estate. Jonathan later invites a group of annoying friends to participate in an all-night party, during which he intends to perform an elaborate parlor trick -- actually a satanic ritual through which he hopes to acquire his father's supernatural powers. This doesn't sit well with Dad, who bursts violently from his grave (a nice touch) to have a chat with his wayward son while legions of ghoulies (well, four or five, anyway) descend upon the revelers. Considering the entire production revolves around the antics of the ghoulies themselves, the alleged puppetry involved is laughable -- the inarticulate puppets do little more than open drooling mouths full of pointy teeth before offscreen stagehands fling them at the heads of cast members. The film's main points of interest lie with the supporting cast, which includes Bobbi Bresee as a supernatural seductress (sporting an eight-foot tongue!) and Eraserhead's John Nance as a bizarre gardener. Somehow, this became one of Empire's top moneymakers, spawning no less than three sequels. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
