Carol Levy Movies
Radley Metzger, one of the most distinctive and original directors in '60s sexploitation, helmed this softcore adult comedy, his last film to date. Audrey (Carol Levy) is a wealthy socialite about to be married, who comes to New York City to visit her best friend from college, Lucy, who looks almost exactly like her (and is also played by Carol Levy). Lucy confesses to Audrey that she's promised to entertain guests in two places at once over the next few days and asks if she would be so kind as to take her place on a weekend getaway to Monaco. Audrey agrees, but she soon learns that Lucy is actually a high-priced prostitute and the "entertaining" she'll need to do is a bit more involved than serving wine and cheese. When Audrey isn't able to get back to New York in time, Lucy has to turn the tables and pose as her friend at her engagement party. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a very enjoyable tongue-in-cheek horror film about some homicidal maniacs who break out of an asylum and terrorize a psychiatrist's family on a dark and stormy night. Martin Landau and Jack Palance are particularly funny, but there are some genuine scares as well. One scene, in which a frightened woman is menaced on her bed by a maniac thrusting a butcher-knife up through the mattress, is a clever send-up that will nevertheless linger in the memory. The coda, in which the crazy Palance has a bizarre encounter with a spaced-out punk chick in a nightclub, is a real gem. Recommended. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

The overemphatic acting of Robby Benson was something of an endurance test to certain critics of the 1980s, but even these carpers were impressed by Benson's outstanding performance in The Chosen. Set in the Brooklyn of the 1940s, the film elucidates the friendship between two young Jews of differing factions. Benson is Hassidic, while Barry Miller is a Zionist. Though separated ideologically, the boys find a common bond through their love of stickball. Rod Steiger costars as Benson's rabbi father, delivering a performance virtually devoid of the mannered stridency that has marred many of his more recent film work. Based on a novel by Chaim Potok, The Chosen has become an annual Hannukah-season TV attraction in many cities; years after its release, the film served as the basis for a short-lived Broadway musical. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The struggle of a has-been singer to work his way back up the charts is the focus of this drama by Robert M. Young with screenplay and music by Paul Simon. Simon plays Jonah, a once-popular singer who now opens for punk rock bands. In the ten years since he had a hit song, Jonah's wife has divorced him, but he still sees his young son as often as he can. With his record company on his back to come up with something that sells, Jonah begins to compromise his own talent when he listens to the advice of a trendy producer. Whether or not he can straighten out his personal life and steer his own ship may depend on his ability to trust his own judgment and adjust to the changing times. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
