Bad Santa co-screenwriters Glenn Ficara and John Requa re-team for this fact-based black comedy starring Jim Carrey as a Texas police officer-turned-con man who makes the leap to white-collar criminal after being sent to prison and falling in love with his sensitive cellmate. Steve Russell (Carrey) is a small-town cop. Bored with his bland lifestyle, Russell turns to fraud as a means of shaking things up. Before long, Russell's criminal antics have landed him behind bars, where he encounters the charismatic Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). A man in a mental ward finds himself walking a line between dreams and reality in this independent thriller. Max (Devere Jehl) is a patient in a Maryland psychiatric hospital who has been having a deeply disturbing recurring dream. In his dream, Max sees from the perspective of a young boy (Nathan Taylor) who is being kidnapped and tortured along with his sister (Sophie Radoci) by a pair of vicious thugs (Tony Tsendeas and Shelley McPherson). Max is convinced he is not insane; instead, he has a psychic connection with the children, and his dreams are in fact a warning of future events only he can stop. However, Max's psychiatrist (Kimberly Fairbanks) doesn't put much stock in this notion, and the only person who believes him is Maddie (Sabrina Gennarino), a fellow patient with a ravenous sexual appetite for Max and some curious notions about the telephone system. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
