The line between dreams and reality become increasingly blurred after a womanizing playboy is nearly killed by a jilted lover in Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar's masterful sophomore effort Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes). It would seem as if Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) has it all. Handsome, charming, and with money to burn, he can get any girl he wants, and usually does so on a nightly basis. Following a birthday party in which he chats up Sofia (Penelope Cruz), the date of his best friend Pelayo (Fele Martinez), Cesar is plunged headfirst into a nightmare world when jealous former lover Nuria (Najwa Nimri) swallows a handful of pills and sends her car careening into a cement wall with the terrified playboy as her hapless passenger. With his formerly strikingly handsome face now twisted into a hideous mass of scarred flesh, Cesar's ugly emotions are now externalized for all to see. Pining for a plastic-surgery miracle to return him to his former glory so that he can seek out Sofia and take a chance at real love, he is pleasantly surprised when the doctors make a breakthrough and Sofia accepts him back into her life. Although all seems perfect for the moment, the formerly soulless player finds that this is only the beginning of his increasingly disturbing journey. Why is Sofia changing appearance and turning into Nuria periodically? And why won't the police and his psychiatrist believe Cesar's desperate attempts to rationalize a world that is growing increasingly surreal? Could it have something to do with a doctor Cesar has seen on television who keeps appearing and attempting to help him out of his nightmare? Producer, writer, director, and lead actor Max Boulois gives credit to William Shakespeare in the credits to this film, but Will's last name is misspelled. This is one of several oversights which tend to leave Othello's story a little disjointed in parts. In Boulois' incarnation, Othello is a black U.S. mercenary in Africa who falls in love with the daughter of a Senator from Boston. The commando group that includes Othello and the erstwhile Desdemona then gets transferred over to a Central American country where the rest of the plot unfolds to the detriment of the lead characters, killing off all chances for a sequel. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This comedy-tinged crime drama finds the detective San Antonio (Gerald Barray) and his sidekick Beru (Jean Richard) hot on the trail of some thugs who have stolen some morphine. They trace the thief to a house, but the prime suspect is found murdered. The house is full of hookers, much to the delight of the two detectives, but the drugs are gone. The crooks raid another home thinking they have found the morphine, but they mistakenly grab some small bottles that contain a virus. Two Yugoslavian patriots try to scuttle a seized warship from World War II rather than let it fall into the hands of the Germans. They contemplate sailing to England to use the boat in the fight against the Nazi invaders. The captain is bound to follow orders while a Nazi collaborator on board secretly plots to take over the vessel. The two friends vow they will take the ship apart one piece at a time rather than give it up. In this convoluted drama, a young woman and two cousins, whom she doesn't know, find that they are named as beneficiaries in their grandmother's will. The young woman, because she's never met them, mistakes a friend of her cousin, for her cousin. Meanwhile a maid begins sleeping with the butler, and the woman's real cousin falls in love with the lawyer.
