Director Neil Burger's road movie The Lucky Ones stars Tim Robbins, Rachel McAdams, and Michael Peña as three Iraq War veterans who take a road trip together. The trio meet on their way home from overseas with Fred Cheaver (Robbins) finishing his service once and for all, while the other two -- Colee Dunn (McAdams) and TK Poole (Peña) -- are about to enjoy 30 days of R and R. A blackout leads to the three renting a car together after their flight is indefinitely delayed, and driving from New York to Cheaver's home in St. Louis. Upon arrival, Cheaver learns that his wife wants a divorce, and his son needs 20,000 dollars in order to attend Stanford. Emotionally shaken, Cheaver tries to drop the other two off at the airport, but they refuse to go until they can help him through his troubles. The two of them, however, are going through their own issues. Poole suffered an injury while on duty that he worries will end his relationship with his girlfriend, and Dunn is trying to deliver a guitar to the parents of her deceased boyfriend, a fellow soldier who died overseas. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

A drug dealer moves on to bigger crimes in an effort to settle a score with disastrous results in this drama inspired by actual events. Though barely out of his teens, Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch) has already built a lucrative career for himself selling drugs -- he has his own home, a luxury car, and posse of friends who do double duty as his crew, including Elvis (Shawn Hatosy), Frankie (Justin Timberlake), and Tiko (Fernando Vargas). While life at Johnny's house is usually a constant party interrupted by occasional dope deals, Johnny has lost all of his patience with Jake Mazursky (Ben Foster), a regular customer who has run up a large tab that he can't pay. Determined to clear Jake's account, Johnny and his boys plan to kidnap Jake and hold him for ransom, but when they happen upon his 15-year-old stepbrother, Zack (Anton Yelchin), they impulsively decide to take the youngster instead. Jake's father, Butch (David Thornton), and his stepmother, Olivia (Sharon Stone), are already furious with their junkie son when they learn about Zack's disappearance, and aren't sure what they should do. Meanwhile at Johnny's place, Frankie takes a liking to young Zack, who already admires his brother's high-flying lifestyle, and introduces the kid to the joys of grown-up partying, which he takes to with dangerous zeal. Also featuring Bruce Willis as Johnny's father, Alpha Dog was based on the real-life story of Jesse James Hollywood, who at the age of 21 became one of the youngest people to ever appear on the FBI's "Most Wanted" list. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

When a young Vienna Music Conservatory student and aspiring composer accepts a job as a copyist for Ludwig von Beethoven, she soon finds her destiny forever interlinked with that of the legendary classical musician in director Agnieszka Holland's romantic period drama. Beethoven (Ed Harris)'s "Ninth Symphony" is about to make its historical debut, but Beethoven's publisher Herr Schlemmer is dying of cancer. Now in desperate need of a copyist to complete the score, the ailing Schlemmer enlists the aid of ambitious student Anna Holz (Diane Kruger); who readily accepts the job despite an explicit warning that the composer is a callous wretch. As Anna begins the arduous process of copying Beethoven's career-defining work, her soul-stirring kindness causes the composer to view their collaboration as a blessing that will enable him to produce some of the most sublime music ever created. When Anna works up the courage to show Beethoven some of her own work, however, his thoughtless derision of the composition causes his sensitive assistant to abandon their current collaboration. Subsequently determined to flee Vienna and marry her devoted paramour Martin, Anna is quickly tracked down by Beethoven and forced to choose between love and duty. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Issues of race and gender cause a group of strangers in Los Angeles to physically and emotionally collide in this drama from director and screenwriter Paul Haggis. Graham (Don Cheadle) is a police detective whose brother is a street criminal, and it hurts him to know his mother cares more about his ne'er-do-well brother than him. Graham's partner is Ria (Jennifer Esposito), who is also his girlfriend, though she has begun to bristle at his emotional distance, as well as his occasional insensitivity over the fact he's African-American and she's Hispanic. Rick (Brendan Fraser) is an L.A. district attorney whose wife, Jean (Sandra Bullock), makes little secret of her fear and hatred of people unlike herself. Jean's worst imaginings about people of color are confirmed when her SUV is carjacked by two African-American men -- Anthony (Chris Bridges, aka Ludacris), who dislikes white people as much as Jean hates blacks, and Peter (Larenz Tate), who is more open minded. Cameron (Terrence Howard) is a well-to-do African-American television producer with a beautiful wife, Christine (Thandie Newton). While coming home from a party, Cameron and Christine are pulled over by Officer Ryan (Matt Dillon), who subjects them to a humiliating interrogation (and her to an inappropriate search) while his new partner, Officer Hansen (Ryan Phillippe), looks on. Daniel (Michael Pena) is a hard-working locksmith and dedicated father who discovers that his looks don't lead many of his customers to trust him. And Farhad (Shaun Toub) is a Middle Eastern shopkeeper who is so constantly threatened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that he decided he needs a gun to defend his family. Crash was the first directorial project for award-winning television and film writer Haggis. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A wealthy industrialist in search of a tax break finds himself at the mercy of a deranged scientist in this surreal comic thriller from Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell. While his overwhelming greed and hawkish business sensibilities have helped to ensure pharmaceutical CEO William Cole (Campbell) a fairly comfortable existence, that doesn't stop the money-minded businessman from traveling to Bravoda with his trophy wife, Jackie (Antoinette Byron), in a bid to diversify his company's holdings. As William heads out to meet with city officials and Jackie gets better acquainted with handsome chauffeur Yegor (Vladimir Kolev), Dr. Ivan Ivanov (Stacy Keach) and his hip-hopping assistant Pavel (Ted Raimi) come close to completing an experiment that may revolutionize organ transplants. When an unfortunate encounter with obsessive hotel maid Tatoya (Tamara Gorski) finds William, Yegor, and Jackie all taken under the care of Dr. Ivanov, a series of transplant surgeries result in both William and Yegor sharing William's body and Jackie's brain being transferred into a break-dancing robot. Now, if William ever has any hope of getting his head back to himself, he and Yegor must use their combined knowledge to hit the streets to find the woman responsible for their deaths. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The star of this half-hour Nickelodeon sitcom was Jamie Lynn Spears, sister of Britney Spears. "Celebrity sibling" Jamie Lynn was cast as Zoey Brooks, the first female student at Pacific Coast Academy, formerly an all-boys' prep school. The stories concerned Zoey's interaction with her male classmates (whose attitudes ranged from hostile to adoring) and the other girls who'd been brought into the academy in our heroine's wake. In time-honored "teencom" tradition, the series bore only a passing resemblance to reality: for example, Pacific Coast Academy boasted not only a fully equipped movie theater, but also a sushi bar. Nevertheless, each episode ended with Zoey and her friends learning an important life lesson with which the home audience could easily relate. The supporting cast included Paul Butcher (son of the same-named NFL star) as Zoey's brother Dustin, likewise a student at the academy; Sean Flynn (grandson of Errol Flynn) as shy Chase Mathews; Alexa Nikolas as ebullient Nicole Bristow; Christopher Massey as Chase's pal Michael Barret, Matthew Underwood as handsome Logan Reese, and, during the first season, Kristin Herrera as the resident "girl with attitude," Dana Cruz; she was replaced in season two by the similarly acerbic-but-lovable Lola, played by Victoria Justice. In addition to the regular cast, the series boasted guest appearances by several of the youthful actors who appeared in other Nickelodeon programs. Zoey 101 debuted on January 9, 2005. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Add Reefer Madness to QueueAdd Reefer Madness to top of Queue
The made-for-cable musical satire Reefer Madness is based on the award-winning play of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the notorious -- and deliciously awful -- 1936 anti-marijuana film originally titled Tell Your Children. A smarmy lecturer (Alan Cumming in the first of his three roles in the film) arrives in a typical small town of the late '30s to warn the populace of the dangers of the "evil weed," bringing along a lurid propaganda film to dramatize his message. In broad, unsubtle, and hilarious strokes, the movie-within-a-movie shows how even a squeaky-clean pair of highschoolers named Mary Lane (Kristen Bell) and Jimmy Harper (Christian Campbell) can become hopeless dope addicts by succumbing to the lure of marijuana. Reefer Madness is not only a savage skewering of the original black-and-white movie (some of the musical's campiest lines are taken directly from the earlier script!), but also a devastating attack on what playwrights Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney consider to be the real reason that the 1936 movie was made: to frighten the public out of their wits in order to keep them under the thumb of an oppressive government. Thus, the musical manages to take a number of not-so-veiled swipes at xenophobia, racism, McCarthyism, the Bush Administration's Homeland Security policy, and even the recent FCC clampdown on "offensive" TV fare (one of the film's highlights is a garish nightclub number featuring Jesus Christ). The ebulliently staged songs include "The Stuff," "Down at the Ol' Five and Dime," "Lonely Pew," "Listen to Jesus Jimmy," "Mary Jane/Mary Lane," "The Brownie Song," "Tell 'Em the Truth," and the title number. Officially titled Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical, this film first aired April 16, 2005, on the Showtime cable service. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Add Meltdown to QueueAdd Meltdown to top of Queue
Originally titled American Meltdown, this speculative made-for-cable melodrama begins as a group of six terrorists, bearing names like Khalid, Shafig, and Ziad, take over a nuclear power plant in San Juan. It turns out that the terrorists' actions are merely symbolic, and that no real harm is intended -- but things get tragically out of control, and soon the military and the government are in full spin mode to gloss over and wash their hands of a deadly nuclear meltdown that threatens to destroy everything within driving distance of the plant. In a virtual reprise of his characterization in the TV series 24, Arnold Vosloo portrays the head of the terrorists, who are more "home grown" than anyone is willing to admit. The film is shot in a punchy, fast-cut, hand-held "breaking news" style, alternating dizzily between color and black-and-white to give it a documentary feel. Meltdown was presented by the FX cable channel on June 6, 2004. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Devon Werkheiser headed the cast of this teen-oriented Nickelodeon comedy series as Ned Bigby, who in the first season had just entered the sixth grade at James K. Polk Middle School. To help his peers navigate through a hostile world of snooty girls, nasty bullies and dictatorial teachers, Ned put together a "survival guide", with each of the series' episodes representing a chapter in that guide. Our hero's best friends and co-conspirators were Cookie (Dan Curtis Lee), a male computer geek, and Moze (Lindsey Shaw), one of the few girls whom Ned could tolerate for more than five minutes at a time. Other students included tough-guy Billy "Bully" Loomer (Kyle Swann), who had a crush on Moze; Bully's sidekick, logicially named Crony (Teo Oliveras); supersmart Suzie (Christian Serratos), Moze's great rival and the object of Ned's hopeless ardor; Martin (Tylor Chase), the brainiest kid in school; Claire (Brooke Marie Bridges), an aspiring lawyer and full-time arbitrator; basketball jock Seth (Alex Black); and the aptly yclept Coconut Head (Rob Pinkston). Of faculty members, the most memorable were funky "life science" teacher Mr. Monroe (JM J. Bullock), brusque PE teacher Ms. Dirga (Kim Sava), and accident-prone shop instructor Mr. Chopsaw (Dave Florek). Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide (its title usually shortened to the first two words) first aired on September 12, 2004. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
