In the mid-'90s, an Englishman by the name of Alan Conway (John Malkovich) conned many people into believing that he was the reclusive American director Stanley Kubrick, despite the fact that Conway was openly gay, bore no physical resemblance to Kubrick, and knew little about the director's work. Conway's story has been loosely adapted into the comedic feature Colour Me Kubrick. Anthony Frewin, who worked as Kubrick's personal assistance for many years, wrote the script, and Brian Cook, who served as Kubrick's assistant director on several films, including Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut, marks his directorial debut with the film. Colour Me Kubrick follows Conway on a number of adventures, wherein he cadges drinks, cash, sex, and more from unsuspecting victims, ranging from a heavy metal band to a wine bar owner (Richard E. Grant) to a British lounge singer (British television comic Jim Davidson making his feature-film debut), who are awestruck by his purported fame and fortune, and willing to overlook Conway's genuinely bizarre behavior in the hopes of impressing the great director. Conway's act reached its pinnacle when he temporarily pulled the wool over the eyes of then-New York Times theater critic Frank Rich (William Hootkins). Colour Me Kubrick features cameos by Ken Russell, Honor Blackman, Peter Sallis, and Marc Warren. In this last gasp of the "Carry On" series, minus most of the "Carry On" players, Jim Dale plays Spanish map-maker Christopher Columbus, who has a plan to navigate a new route to India, bypassing the Sultan of Turkey (Rik Mayall) and his sky-high tributes. He convinces King Ferdinand of Spain (Leslie Phillips) and Queen Isabella (June Whitfield) to finance his trip, and he sets off for points east with a cabin boy in tow. In the third episode of the four-part story "Enlightenment," the Doctor (Peter Davison) must prevent the Eternals, a parasitic alien race, from winning an extraterrestrial yachting competition, thereby placing themselves in a position to rule the Universe. Complicating matters is Captain Wrack (Lynda Baron) of the space yacht Buccaneer, who has been anointed with awesome special powers by the Doctor's old nemesis, the Black Guardian (Valentine Dyall). This musical comedy stars Herman's Hermits, the popular British pop group that made the title song from the movie a million-selling hit record. Herman (Peter Noone) inherits a greyhound and decides to enter the dog in the races. The dog, appropriately named Mrs. Brown, and the group travel from Manchester to London in hopes of entering a national invitational. The group finds work as a pop group (quite a stretch) as Herman falls for the girl next door. The group sings nine songs including the title track and the romantic tune "There's A Kind Of Hush." Herman's Hermits were much more popular in America than they ever were in England. Peter Noone later developed into a competent actor. The original group toured together until 1976. Guitarist Derek Leckenby and drummer Barry Whitwam continued to tour as Herman's Hermits into the 1990s on the oldies circuit. In the first episode of the four-part story "The Gunfighters," the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane) decide to take a well-deserved vacation. Unfortunately, the TARDIS crew ends up in Tombstone, AZ, just before the Gunfight at the OK Corral. While waiting to have Doc Holliday (Anthony Jacobs) take care of his aching tooth, the Doctor (William Hartnell) is deputized by Marshal Wyatt Earp (John Alderson); meanwhile, Steven (Peter Purves) is mistaken for a notorious gunslinger, and Dodo (Jackie Lane) is kidnapped by the bad guys. Dodo (Jackie Lane) has already been abducted by the notorious Clanton gang; Steven (Peter Purves), mistaken for a famous gunslinger, is about to be lynched; and the Doctor (William Hartnell), reluctantly deputized by Wyatt Earp (John Alderson), is unceremoniously thrown in jail.
