A 14-year-old schoolboy from Kashmir becomes an innocent pawn in a treacherous game between militants, the army, peace-broker politicians, and religious leaders after discovering a handgun on his way home from school. Sent to live with his aunt and uncle after militants killed his parents when he was just four years old, Sikandar Raza's primary goals are to make his foster parents proud and keep his soccer game sharp. Then, one day, while walking home from a soccer game with his friend Nasreen, Sikandar finds a gun. Despite Nasreen's gentle attempts to dissuade her friend from picking up the weapon, Sikandar decides to take the gun home, and the darker side of his nature gradually begins to emerge. Later, when people around the city begin getting killed, it starts to become apparent that the young schoolboy has become hopelessly ensnared in a twisted game being played by the people in power. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Indian director Rajeev Manoj Virani's cross-cultural romance My Bollywood Bride follows the love affair that unexpectedly blossoms between a hunky, fair-haired American novelist named Alex (Jason Lewis) and an ebullient Indian tour guide named Reena (Kashmera Shah). The two fall in love in Los Angeles, but are then forcibly separated by circumstance, as Reena must return to Asia to tend to her seriously ill father and enter an arranged marriage with a cocky, egomaniacal producer named Shekhar (Gulshan Grover). Failing to understand (or accept) these circumstances, Alex then flies to India, heart-in-tow, determined to win Reena back - and immediately runs head-first into madcap conflicts with both Shekhar and Reena's parents. Sanjay Suri co-stars as Reena's Indian pal Bobby, who makes a series of unsuccessful attempts to keep Alex out of trouble as the American vies for Reena's heart. My Brother...Nikhil isn't the first Hindi film to deal with AIDS, but unlike, say, Phir Milenge, which was essentially a Bollywood remake of Philadelphia with a heterosexual woman in the Tom Hanks role, My Brother...Nikhil is about a closeted gay man who contracts HIV, shattering his seemingly perfect life. Nikhil (Sanjay Suri, who also produced the film) is a champion swimmer and local hero in Goa in the early '90s, where the film takes place. He has a loving relationship with his fiercely independent sister, Anamika (Juhi Chawla), and his doting mother (Lillete Dubey of Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair). His connection to his hard-driving father (Victor Banerjee) is more problematic. His father pushes Nikhil too hard at his swimming, becoming angry when the young man loses a race, and he also disapproves of Nikhil's friends, among whom is Nigel (Purab Kohli). When Nikhil is told that he has HIV, news spreads quickly throughout the region. His teammates on the swim team and most of his friends abandon him. His parents are publicly humiliated, and even they spurn him. Only Anamika, her husband, Sam (Gautam Kapoor), and Nigel stand by him. He needs all their help when he's arrested (contracting HIV or being openly gay were essentially criminal acts in India at the time) and held prisoner in an abandoned sanitarium. Those closest to Nikhil band together, hire a lawyer, and fight for his release. The story is told by Nikhil's loved ones, who address the camera directly, in the style of a documentary. The film is based on a true story. My Brother...Nikhil, written, directed, and edited by Onir, features music by Viveck Philip and lyrics by Amitabh Varma. It was shown at the 2005 New York Asian Film Festival, presented by Subway Cinema. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

When Pooja (Kirti Reddy) takes a vacation in Agra and meets renowned artist Kabir (Abhishek Bachchan) it's love at first sight -- for the artist at least. Though Pooja is attracted by Kabir's undeniable talent, her true heart lies with her disapproving boss Mr. Oberoi's (Kader Khan) business-minded son Raj (Sanjay Suri). Just as Mr. Oberoi decides to terminate Pooja from the company for frequently arriving tardy, Pooja's scheming co-worker Maggi (Johnny Lever) comes up with a foolproof plan for Pooja to keep her job. By using pictures of Pooja and Kabir to convince the boss that his absent-minded employee is engaged to be married, Maggi manages to save salvage Pooja's job -- but not without a catch.
