Adrift in Manhattan, the third feature effort of Hispanic writer/director Alfredo de Villa (Washington Heights, Yellow), intercuts three intensely dramatic stories of life during a cold New York winter, each of which revolves around the concept (and thematic motif) of vision. In the first, an eye doctor grieving from a traumatic loss (Heather Graham) must reexamine her life and priorities; in the second, an artist of advanced age must contend with encroaching blindness -- thus losing the one of his five senses that represents his greatest asset; in the third, a photographer grapples with inner turmoil. De Villa brings these stories together for an unanticipated intersection on a Manhattan subway line, and watches as these individuals -- initially, complete strangers to one another -- help to guide each other through their struggles, pain, and angst. William Baldwin and Erika Michaels co-star. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Two people are found dead, and the subsequent investigation quickly segues from murder to drugs. At the center of the drama is Caryn Wyman (Charlotte D'amboise), the wife of a U.S. Army major heavily committed to an anti-drug campaign in Colombia. But Caryn refuses to cooperate with the D.A.'s office until McCoy (Sam Waterston) backs her into a potentially fatal corner. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Several people are senselessly murdered at a clothing store. Investigating detectives Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) end up arresting James Smith (Denis O'Hare), a schizophrenic who hasn't been taking his medication. Unfortunately for the D.A.'s office, Smith turns out to be a lawyer -- and an unusually clever one, as he proves when he defends himself in court. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
An inner-city basketball game, held in memory of a slain teenager, ends in a gang-related bloodbath. As members of the media look on, the organizer of the event, activist Brother Kwasi (Tom Wright), exchanges heated words with Detective Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz). A bad situation is made worse when Andy lets slip a racial slur -- placing 15th Precinct commander Lt. Fancy (James McDaniel) in an embarrassingly controversial position. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Vernon Johns Story is the inspirational saga of the man who preceded Martin Luther King Jr. as pastor of a Montgomery, Alabama Baptist Church. Described as "one of God's most brilliant preachers," Johns campaigned tirelessly for Civil Rights long before the cudgel was taken up by the "mainstream." Before leaving his post, Johns passed the torch to young Reverend King, who is but a minor character in this positive, uplifting TV-movie. James Earl Jones curbs his tendency to ham it up as Vernon Johns, delivering an understated and most effective performance. The Vernon Johns Story was syndicated to local stations during the week of January 15-21, 1994. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This feature-length spin-off of the popular television horror anthology is directed by John Harrison, who directed many episodes of the television series. The film consists of four grisly and gruesome horror teasers. "The Wraparound Story" stars Deborah Harry as Betty, a chef with a kitchen complete with Cuisinart and dungeon. She plans to cook a little boy, who delays his execution by telling Betty three tales of terror. The first tale is "Lot 249," based on the mummy story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The tale concerns Bellingham (Steve Buscemi), a bug-eyed graduate student who has raised a mummy from the dead. The second tale, "Cat from Hell," adapted by George A. Romero from a Stephen King story, deals with a broken-down millionaire (William Hickey), who has made his millions by developing habit-forming painkillers. He is convinced that, since 5,000 cats have been killed in his lab experiments in order to develop his pills, a stray cat has killed his family. He hires a hit man (David Johansen) to track down the cat and rub him out. The third tale, "Lover's Vow," is based on "Woman in the Snow," one of the episodes in Kwaidan.James Remar plays an artist who strikes a deal with the devil and is rewarded with a beautiful wife (Rae Dawn Chong) and a respectful art career. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide
