John Phillip Law Movies

Virtually every account of actor John Phillip Law's career included an early screen credit in The Magnificent Yankee, filmed when Law was 13. This "fact" has never been adequately confirmed; Law himself traced his involvement in acting to his amateur-theatrical days at the University of Hawaii. After working with New York's Lincoln City repertory, Law officially launched his film career in Europe. He made his Hollywood bow as a boyish, gangling Soviet sailor in The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming (1966). Later highlights of Law's extensive film work include the role of blind "guardian angel" Pygar in the kinky Jane Fonda vehicle Barbarella (1968), German air ace Baron Von Richtofen in Roger Corman's Von Richtofen and Brown (1970), and the title role in the Ray Harryhausen FX-fest The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973). John Phillip Law's infrequent TV work also included a mid-1980s stint on the CBS daytimer Young and the Restless. He died of undisclosed causes at age 70, in the spring of 2008. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The feature debut of Roman Coppola (son of Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola) centers around an international film crew making a low-budget, Barbarella-like feature in Paris in 1969. The film is called Dragonfly and is being directed by Andrzej (Gérard Depardieu), who wishes to make a revolutionary work rather than the tacky fluff it is becoming. He is soon fired by the film's Italian producer Enzo (Giancarlo Giannini) when he can't produce a satisfactory climactic scene. After briefly replacing Andrzej with an American horrormeister named Felix DeMarco (Jason Schwartzman), the film's editor and second-unit director, the job is finally handed to Paul (Jeremy Davies). Paul is pleased with the offer, but more devoted to his 16 mm filming of his diary of daily life. He eventually begins to fall for the leading lady (Angela Lindvall), but must retrieve footage of the feature stolen by Andrezej and try to keep the troubled production together. CQ features Billy Zane, Massimo Ghini, and Dean Stockwell in supporting roles. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide

Italian filmmaker Sergio Bergonzelli (Nelle Pieghe della Carne) directed this ridiculous horror film starring John Phillip Law as another in the long line of the genre's crazed artists. Reminiscent of A Bucket of Blood and Color Me Blood Red, the film delights in showing Law painting with blood, ranting about being the reincarnation of Van Gogh, and pursuing pianist Brigitte Christensen. He wants her to replace his dead wife, whose corpse sits at the piano in his stately castle. The dead wife isn't spared either, getting molested by Law's necrophiliac butler (former sword-and-sandal star Gordon Mitchell), who spends his spare time sawing up local women. To add to the catalogue of silliness, Law gets his ear lopped off by a ghost before the castle comes tumbling to the ground. Absolute trash, this one is for completists and masochists only. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

There's not much doubt this film's a direct descendant of Schwarzenegger's Terminator classic, though it's certainly a distant descendant. Here a fugitive from a far-away planet escapes execution in a hijacked spaceship and crashes on the planet Earth where he's befriended by some young campers and the local constable. However this Terminator take also has a chasing enforcer (the Alienator) who shows up before long, sent to capture the escapee. The earthlings come to the defense of their new friend and fight it out with the indestructible Alienator. ~ All Movie Guide

Meanwhile, the country is taken over by the nefarious Marxist General Turner (Oliver Reed), who takes Ryan and the other students (many of them very attractive women) hostage. This is a winning, upbeat story about a Hispanic kid from the streets who suffers through a battle against cancer and discrimination at the same time. When Neekos Valdez (Esai Morales) was swiping a radio from a pickup one night, he was accidentally dragged along the street behind the pickup. Rushed to the hospital, the doctors treat him but also discover he has cancerous tumors in his abdomen. Shocked into an awareness of the impermanence of human life, Neekos puts up a valiant fight against the cancer, follows his prescribed regimen, and in the process, he makes friends with another cancer patient, Jack Marti (Chuck Bail), an ex-boxer. When up-tight hospital administrators discover that Neekos is the son of an illegal immigrant, they decide that deportation proceedings should be started against him. His social worker and his doctor do the best they can to help him, but they have no authority over the hospital administration. His only hope may be Jack, the one man who was inspired by his fight against cancer, and the one man with enough courage to step into the ring when others see the contender as too formidable to face.

This unusual horror anthology mixed edited-down versions of one unreleased feature and two previously released films (Death Wish Club and The Nightmare Never Ends) with newly shot wraparound footage to create a surreal combination of crazed plotting and grindhouse gore. The framing device consists of God and Satan on a train full of breakdancing teenagers telling each other stories about humans. The first story focuses on an institute for the mentally ill that is really a cover for a black market organ-harvesting operation. The second story focuses on a man who falls for a woman who is part of group of people that attempt suicide for fun. The final story tells the tale of a group of mortals who attempt to stop Satan from returning to earth to begin the apocalypse. Each episode combines deranged plot twists with heaping helpinds of sex and violence, resulting in a film that plays like a lysergic and deranged variant on comparatively sedate horror anthologies like Creepshow. Night Train to Terror didn't enjoy a great deal of box-office success, but has gone on to enjoy a lengthy life on home video, where it continues to astound (and confound) viewers with its blood-spattered weirdness. ~ Donald Guarisco, All Movie Guide
