A would-be novelist with no ideas of his own mines the tragedies of an unsuspecting woman to his advantage in this drama. Robert (Ulrich Matthes) is a college professor and struggling writer living in Konstanz, a town in Southern Germany. Robert has been working on a novel for years, but beyond a rough idea about life in Germany before the Berlin Wall came down, he has no worthwhile ideas and doesn't have much to show for his efforts; as Robert edges into his mid-forties, he's begun to worry his literary career will never get off the ground. Robert happens to meet a young woman named Inga (Anna Maria Muehe) who was raised by her grandparents after her mother died soon after she was born; Robert senses there's something in her story that would make for a good novel, and he begins drawing her out, trying to find out more about her and her childhood that he can use as source material for his book. As Robert digs deeper, it becomes clear he's learned a few things about Inga's past that she doesn't know -- and not everything she's been told about her mother is the truth. Novemberkind (aka November Child) was the first feature film from writer and director Christian Schwochow. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

With an approach that recalls such outings as Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), Til Schweiger's zany farce 1 1/2 Knights - In Search of the Ravishing Princess Herzelinde concerns two knights who set out on a heroic mission, to rescue the kidnapped Princess Herzelinde. Given their propensity for klutziness, however, the expedition soon turns into a gag-filled comedy of errors. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Ed Herzog and actress Heike Makatsch (Almost Heaven) reunite for this easygoing comedy drama concerning two unfamiliar sisters attempting to connect during a short holiday in Spain during the off-season. Anne (Makatsch) is a stressed out Berlin music executive who has hit her thirties and recently learned that she is six weeks pregnant with the child of her terminally mellow boyfriend Philipp (Marc Hosemann). Despite the fact that she loves Philipp dearly, the fact remains that he is fairly unreliable and she is the dictionary definition of a workaholic. After making the decision to keep news of the pregnancy to herself, Anne and her eighteen year old sister Marie (Anna Maria Muehe) book an apartment in a seaside resort town in Spain and set out for a brief vacation. The two sisters don't really know one another too well, but what better opportunity to get acquainted than during a relaxing getaway? Despite their most sincere attempts to find some common ground, Anne and Marie gradually find themselves pushed farther apart than ever before when Anne makes a drunken attempt to seduce a vacationing student named Max (Sebastian Urzendowsky), who later warms up to the younger of the two siblings. As the reality of her age and disillusionment sets in, Anne experiences a minor breakdown that leaves her feeling exceptionally vulnerable. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Not to be confused with the 1988 Sidney Lumet/River Phoenix drama of the same name, German helmer Buelent Akinci's bizarre drama Running on Empty follows Burkhard Wagner (Jens Harzer), a middle aged, door-to-door insurance salesman who lives out of his car, jetting along Teutonic highways and byways in a beaten-up Volvo and peddling policies to various area residents. Eccentric to the extreme (with a shrill, maniacal cackle that emerges from time to time and suggests that he has more than a few parts on order), Wagner nonetheless manages to sustain himself with a steady income. He is abetted by an oddball quirk: during sales pitches, he bursts into song, belting out French pop tunes, which inexplicably charm prospective customers. Burkhard also periodically pulls off of the Autobahn to drop quarters into pay phones and call his estranged wife, reassuring her constantly that he'll return home to her and their child as soon as he's able. However, he soon meets a sexy yet lonely bed-and-breakfast owner, Caroline (Marina Galic) at a nearby café. After stalking her multiple times, Burkhard accepts her invitation to come and reside at her inn. The relationship is riddled with buried motivations, but Akinci keeps things enigmatic, and defiantly refuses to spell out the film's ulteriors prior to its conclusion. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
