Director Rabah Ameur-Zaimeche's offbeat religious drama Dernier Maquis concerns Mao, a Muslim man self-employed in a half-dilapidated industrial park, whose trade involves repairing pallets and trucks. As a move of religious expression, Mao opts to erect a mosque on-site, and promptly designates a local individual as an imam (or mosque leader) which causes more than a few ripples among his workers. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A belated reunion between two estranged brothers is marred by distrust and sibling rivalry in this family drama from director Rolando Colla. Hamid is a forty year-old Algerian man currently living in Brussels. He makes his living by working for an illegal underground network suspected of financing terrorism, and suspects that the authorities are monitoring his every move. One day, seemingly out of the blue, Hamid receives a telephone call from his brother Louis, whom he hasn't seen in over three decades. Despite the fact that he believes the authorities orchestrated the call, Hamid accepts his brother's request to join him in Switzerland so that the brothers may visit their ageing mother. Later, as Hamid and Louis return to Brussels, there is no question that the police are closing in. While Hamid remains steadfast in his determination to discover what role his brother played in the apparent sting operation, Louis probes to learn the reason why he and his brother have been separated for so long. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Mel Gibson's well-publicized production The Passion of the Christ concerns the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The dialogue is spoken in the ancient Aramaic language, along with Latin and Hebrew. In the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives, Jesus (James Caviezel) is betrayed by Judas Iscariot (Luca Lionello). Jesus is condemned to death for blasphemy and brought before Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov), the Roman governor of Judea, for sentencing. The roaring crowd demand his death, so Pilate orders his crucifixion. Jesus is severely beaten and made to carry his cross up to Golgotha, the hill outside Jerusalem, where he is nailed to the cross. Romanian theatrical actress Maia Morgenstern plays Mary, Mother of God, and Italian superstar Monica Bellucci plays Mary Magdalene. Amid much controversy involving Gibson and various religious organizations, The Passion of the Christ received an international theatrical release in February of 2004. In March 2005, Gibson released an unrated version of the film, dubbed The Passion Recut, that eliminated five to six minutes of the more graphic scenes of flogging and crucifixion. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
