Released in France as Le Diable au Corps, The Devil in the Flesh stars Micheline Presle as a nurse at a French military hospital during World War I. Gerard Philipe costars as a high school student who carries a torch for the older Presle. Under pressure from her parents to marry, Presle begins an affair with the boy, but gives up on him when he proves to be far too immature and jealous for her tastes. After a deliberately inconsiderate act on Philipe's part, Presle opts for a loveless marriage with a soldier who is about to head for the front. When Philipe selfishly reenters her life, she resumes the affair, becoming pregnant by the boy. The end result of Philipe's callous behavior is tragedy for all concerned. The Devil in the Flesh is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Raymond Radiguet, who died of typhoid fever at the age of 20. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Le Cordon Bleu doesn't refer to a ham-and-veal delicacy, though there is plenty of ham in this Gallic comedy. The scene is a posh Parisian hotel-restaurant, which ends up a hotbed of infidelity and mistaken identity. Hotel cook Regina (Cora Lynn) is romantically involved with her boss Octave (Pierre Bertin), the husband of Irma (Jeanne Herbling). Mistaken for another woman, Irma is passionately pursued by Bernereau (Baron Fils), whose wife gets involved with someone else's husband, whose wife gets involved with . . . This keeps going for 85 minutes, by which time the audience is as winded as the cast. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A novel by British author Eliot Crashaw-Williams was the source for the French melodrama La Nuit a L'Hotel. Jean Perier stars as naïve Colonel who spends an evening in the titular hotel. Though he is loved by a middle-aged lady violinist (Magdelaine Berubet), the Colonel has eyes only for young and reckless Marion Barnes (Marcelle Romee). Convincing himself that Marion is a girl of high principle and virtue, the Colonel is so aghast when he discovers her true libertine nature that he promptly kills himself! La Nuit a L'Hotel was also filmed in a German language version. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
