Acceding to the literal interpretation of the folk-saying "A virgin is a sty in the devil's eye," Satan employs a reincarnated Don Juan (Jarl Kulle) to seduce Britt-Marie, the young daughter (Bibi Andersson) of a country parson. Poor Don Juan falls in love with the girl, however, while his servant Pablo (Sture Lagerwall) attempts to do the same with her mother. One of Bergman's few direct comedies (he even reassures viewers of the fact in a note titled "Dear Frightened Audience"), Devil's Eye also harks back to his stage experience by appearing in separate acts--with introductions by Gunnar Bjornstrand. The film is available in two video versions: subtitled and dubbed. ~ John Bush, All Movie Guide

Jar Elskar Dig, Karlsson (I Love You, Karlsson) was much admired by international critics when it first appeared in 1947. In a quasi-realistic fashion, the story concentrates on the very special world of children. A case of "puppy love" motivates the plotline, with chucklesome and sometimes touching results. Adult film fans were drawn to Jar Elskar Dig, Karlsson by the return appearance of old Danish screen-favorite Marguerite Viba. Two directors were responsible for the film, with presumably one of the helmsman exclusively devoted to the juvenile cast members. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Her Kommer Vi stars Sture Lagervall, who co-directed the film with John Zacharias (seemingly everyone's collaborator in the Swedish film industry). The title translates as Here We Are Coming, a reference to the military troops depicted herein. This being a musical comedy, rest assured that the soldiering rookies have romance in mind rather than world conquest. The popular Gunner Bjornstrand heads the cast, proving anew just why he was so popular. Indistinguishable from the many other Swedish military comedies of the era, Her Kommer Vi is set apart by the excellent camerawork of Hilmer Ekdahl and the sprightly musical score by Ernfrid Ahlin and "Roland." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sture Lagerwall, Gunnar Björnstrand, (more)
Prolific Swedish filmmaker Arne Mattson was in his "thriller" mode while filming Det Kom en Gest (aka A Guest is Coming and The Guest Game). It all begins when a family Christmas dinner is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Essman (Strue Lagerwall). An utter stranger to the family members, Essman has a bizarre and profound effect on subsequent events. Particularly effected is Christina (Gerd Hagman), who is revealed to be certifiably insane. Det Kom en Gest was scripted by Stieg Trenter, one of Sweden's most popular mystery novelists. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sture Lagerwall, Ivar Kage, (more)

- Holger Loewenadler, Sture Lagerwall, (more)
Karick och Stortlopp translates literally as Love Goes Up and Down. This Swedish romantic comedy centers around a young screenwriter (Sture Lagervall) who heads to the mountains to soak up "local color." Assigned to write a film about skiing, our hero meets a female journalist (Eva Dahlbeck) on a similar mission. A romance follows, on and off the slopes. Very lightweight stuff, Karick och Stortlopp benefits from the presence of Eva Dahlbeck, who though artistically superior to her surroundings delivers a sincere and effective performance. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sture Lagerwall, Eva Dahlbeck, (more)
Though American filmgoers were denied the pleasures of European films during WWII, there were no limits so far as imports from neutral Sweden were concerned. Set in the 19th century, Lasse-Maja is a tongue-in-cheek swashbuckler, with Sture Lagerwall as the title character. By day a humble and seemingly dimwitted cook, Lasse-Maja does the "Robin Hood" bit under cover of night. Of interest is the fact that the hero frequently dons female attire when committing his robberies (even Errol Flynn stopped short of this!) Liane Linden co-stars as the lively heroine, who loves Lasse-Maja even after the dashing rogue steals from her own father. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sture Lagerwall, Emil Fjellstroem, (more)
This Swedish romantic comedy was released outside of Scandinavia as My Friend Clock-John. The title character, played by Thor Modeen, is a pickpocket, or "clock-lifter." The comic antics of Clock-John are offered in contrast to the regeneration of fellow thief Nils (Sture Lagerwell). Hoping to fall heir to a huge fortune, Nils poses as the long-lost son of elderly dowager Mrs. Bergstrom (Hilda Borgstrom). Touched by his "mother"'s warmth and humanity, Nils finally proves himself worthy of the hand of Mrs. Bergstrom's pretty daughter Anne Marie (Birgit Tengroth) -- but not before revealing his true identity, thereby avoiding any hint of incest! ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- Sture Lagerwall, Birgit Tengroth, (more)
In this Swedish film, Clary (Karin Carlsson) the beautiful wife of successful businessman Johan Borg (Lars Hanson), makes the unhappy discovery that she is pregnant. Unwilling to suffer through the emotional and physical effects of bearing a child, Clary opts to keep the information from her husband and have a secret abortion. However, when knowledge of Clary's covert operation falls into the hands of a heartless blackmailer, things become tragically complicated. Ingrid Bergman plays the faithful secretary who harbors a secret crush on her boss, Johan Borg. ~ Iotis Erlewine, All Movie Guide

The title of this Swedish romantic comedy translates as Red Day. The hero, Sture Lagerwald, is a dedicated young communist. His sister Lilli-Tollie Zellman, however, is in love with Nils Jacobson, an equally dedicated fascist. With the big "Red Day" approaching, sis begins to worry that her brother and her sweetheart will end up killing each other at the festivities. So she contrives to have them both arrested to keep them out of harm's way. Forced to share the same cell, Lagerwald and Jacobson come to realize that they really aren't that different after all, and everything is rosy at fadeout time. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
