A drifter becomes both a bank robber and a hero in this crime thriller. Andrew McCarthy stars as Wade Corey, who hitches a ride on a freight train already occupied by Doyle Kennedy (Matt Dillon), a charming ex-con who convinces Wade to accompany him to his hometown. Once there, Wade realizes too late that Doyle is intent on robbing the local bank. After they are separated following the crime, Wade hides the money. Happening upon a drowning in progress, he saves a young girl who just happens to be the daughter of the state governor, and he becomes an unlikely hero. Finding work at a nearby farm, the meandering Wade becomes a hired hand, falls for the beautiful daughter (Leslie Hope) of his boss, and dreads the return of Doyle, who is sure to come looking for his money. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

The film that elevated German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder from domestic approbation to international acclaim, The Marriage of Maria Braun stars the director's on-and-off favorite actress Hanna Schygulla in the title role. During the allied siege of Germany in the last year of the war, Maria's new husband (Klaus Löwitsch) is shipped off to the Russian front before the marriage is consummated. As she struggles to survive wartime deprivations, Maria haunts the local train station, seeking out information concerning her husband. When it appears that she's a widow, Maria takes a job as a barmaid and befriends a black soldier (George Byrd) from the occupying allied troops, who sees to it that Maria's family receives vital food and supplies. The opportunistic Maria eventually takes a job with a wealthy importer (Ivan Desny), building herself up to a position of power and indispensability. Filmed on location in Kansas City, The Delinquents was the first big-screen directorial effort by Robert Altman, who also wrote and produced the film. Altman's participation is far more impressive than the film itself, which is pretty bad. Future Billy Jack star Tom Laughlin plays Scotty, a nice teenager who goes bad in a hurry. Told to get lost by the father of his girl friend Janice (Rosemary Howard), Scott gets mixed up with a street gang, headed by the ineluctable Richard Bakalyan. The film's highlight is a rumble at a drive-in movie, which is so much better than the rest of The Delinquents that it stands out like an unsore thumb. For music fans, Julia Lee and the Bill Nolan Quintet Minus Two offer a rendition of the deathless "Dirty Rock Boogie." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
