In this youthful drama, Tom, a 14- year-old who's parents have just divorced, is abruptly uprooted from his wealthy Chicago home and sent to the strange land of LA to live in the far-out beach bungalow of his aunt, an aging hippie still stuck in a by-gone era. He is unhappy with the new arrangement and finds his new bohemian lifestyle strange and the activities of his new peers, stupid. His life begins to change a bit when he befriends a young surfer named Fin. At first he thinks of the fun-loving Fin as a real dolt, but later he admits he was wrong. Like the Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn characters on which they are loosely based, the two new friends soon find themselves having a series of adventures, some of them dangerous; by the summer's end, Tom finds himself wiser, accustomed to California, and a lot more grown up. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

This sequel to the surprise box office hit The Blue Lagoon (1980) mimics its predecessor's romantic adventure formula of a lush tropical locale inhabited by scantily clad, nubile teens discovering their sexuality. Spotted adrift in a boat with his deceased parents Richard and Emmeline, a baby boy is rescued by a passing ship. Adopted by the widow Hargrove (Lisa Pelikan), infant Richard is soon at sea again after he, his new mother and her baby daughter Lilli abandon ship in the face of a cholera epidemic. Washing ashore on the same island populated by the first film's heroes, Hargrove protects and raises her young charges until a disease also claims her life. Years pass and both Richard (Brian Krause) and Lilli (Milla Jovovich) become young adults. While Richard discovers his manhood by racing a lagoon shark and spying on the island's dangerous natives, Lilli becomes a woman with her first period. Eventually their raging hormones lead the two into each other's arms. Marriage and a pregnancy follow, but Richard and Lilli's union is threatened by the arrival of a ship carrying a lovely captain's daughter (Nana Coburn) with eyes for the loincloth-clad Richard. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Stephen King wrote his first original screenplay for this horror gore fest that features cameos by directors Clive Barker, Joe Dante, Tobe Hooper, John Landis, and King himself (playing a cemetery attendant). The story concerns a twilight people named "sleepwalkers" --creatures similar to vampires and werewolves whose faces turn animalistic whenever they are frightened or angry and who require the lifeforce of a virgin to survive. A single-parent sleepwalker family, consisting of Mary Brady (Alice Krige) and her son Charles (Brian Krause), have taken up residence in a small Indiana town. Charles has expressed a romantic interest in the attractive Tanya Robertson (Madchen Amick), a girl in his high school literature class. Mary wants Charles to lure Tanya home so that she can suck out her life force, but it appears that Charles has fallen in love with her --that is, until their first date, at a picnic at the cemetery. There Charles changes from a shy romantic suitor into a brutal and violent force, slapping Tanya around and attempting to rape her. But Tanya wards off his advances by plunging a corkscrew into his torso. Charles staggers back home to mother, where she nurses him back to health. Originally made for the Sci-Fi Channel, this intergalactic thriller offers yet another riff on the themes from Alien. The terror begins when it's discovered that "Galileo's Child," an ancient moon, has spun from its orbit and is rapidly whirling towards Earth. To save the planet, a band of brave miners set off to land upon the rogue moon and to engineer a means by which it can safely be turned away from Earth. To accomplish this, the miners must create a series of great tunnels into "Galileo's" surface. Unfortunately, in so doing, they uncover a great tomb, the once-secure burial site of an unspeakable alien terror that only needs contact with the moon's nitrogen atmosphere to reawaken and ravenously comb the little planet for fresh meat. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The Halliwell sisters experience mixed emotions when their long-absent father, Victor (played in this episode by Tony Denison), returns. Things become even more strained when dear old dad aligns himself with some shape-shifting neighbors who would love to unlock the secrets of the "Book of Shadows" -- and will stop at nothing to do so. And in a plot development that will bear great significance on the episodes to come, Brian Krause makes his first appearance as studly handyman Leo Wyatt, to whom Piper (Holly Marie Combs) is immediately attracted. ~ All Movie Guide

Three of the most gorgeous TV witches since the days of Elizabeth Montgomery were the heroines of the hour-long WB fantasy series Charmed, which first materialized on October 7, 1998. Reunited in their ancestral San Francisco mansion, the Halliwell sisters -- Prudence (aka Prue, played by Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), and came upon a dusty tome titled the "Book of Shadows," which by and by revealed a secret that had long been withheld from them: the sisters were witches known as the "Charmed Ones," blessed with extraordinary powers which they were expected to use in the never-ending fight of good against evil. Prue, the oldest, had the gift of telekinesis, enabling her to move objects at will; middle child Piper was able to stop time; and Phoebe, the baby of the family, was able to see the future. The ritual enabling them to combine their powers involved the linking of hands and chanting in unison, "The power of three will set us free." Of course, now that the girls knew they were witches, they were immediately targeted for destruction by all manner of warlocks, sorceresses, and malevolent spirits, many of these hoping to steal the Halliwells' powers for themselves. Also, in their efforts to lead "normal" lives and not give away their secrets, the ladies encountered a great deal of difficulty in the romance department -- not to mention the holding and maintaining of regular employment.

During season one, Prue worked for the Buckland Auction House, whose owner turned out to be a warlock; she also lost her policeman boyfriend, Andy Trudeau (T.W. King), who was killed in an effort to save the Halliwells from a demon. Phoebe's private life was not quite so tempestuous, though she had a bad habit of losing jobs due to the bad things happening around her. The impressionable Piper, who managed to find work as a caterer and later as the owner of the "P3 Club" nightspot, thought she had found true love in the form of hunky handyman Leo Wyatt (Brian Krause), until learning that Leo was a "Whitelighter," a guardian angel fated to protect all good witches from harm -- and as such, was off limits. In later seasons, however, Leo was demoted to "mortality" and was able to marry Piper, with whom he had a "bewitched" son named Wyatt. By the time Leo's powers were back to full steam in season five, he'd been appointed an "Elder" Whitelighter; his former job of protecting the sisters was taken over by another Whitelighter named Chris Perry (Drew Fuller), who turned out to have a hidden agenda.

Season three saw quite a few upheavals in the lives of the sisters, with Phoebe falling for Assistant DA Cole Turner (Julian McMahon) -- who turned out to be the demon Belthazor, and whose mission was to kill the sisters. Cole managed to purge himself of evil, only to revert to wickedness -- a cycle that continued to repeat itself until, in season four, the "bad" Cole married and impregnated Phoebe with his evil seed. Eventually the baby was stolen by a demon called The Seer (Debbi Morgan), and poor, mixed-up Cole wound up trapped in another dimension before being "vanquished" permanently. (At least Phoebe landed a permanent job as a newspaper advice columnist once the dust had settled!) As for Prue, season three of Charmed turned out to be her last when she was killed during a "demon assault." Her place in the Halliwell household was taken in season four by the girls' half sister, Paige Matthews (Rose McGowan), who like the late Prue possessed telekinetic powers. Paige would eventually find "civilian" employment as a social worker, enabling her to emulate the other girls by applying her powers for the forces of good on a full-time basis.

There were scores of additional plot complications and story arcs occurring in and out of the "real world" and back and forth in time (at one point, for example, the heroines were converted into Greek goddesses). "Charmed" though the Halliwell girls may have been, it didn't mean that they exactly led charmed lives. Perhaps it was the unstable nature of the world in which our heroines dwelled that made Charmed one of the WB's most successful offerings; viewers literally never knew what to expect from one week to the next! ~ All Movie Guide

Prue (Shannen Doherty) experiences curiously maternal feelings as she endeavors to rescue a young male witch (David Netter), who has been kidnapped in order to assist in a bank robbery -- and whose whereabouts remain a total mystery. Elsewhere, Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) discovers what the viewers of Charmed have known for weeks: handyman Leo Wyatt (Brian Krause) is really a "Whitelighter," assigned to act as guardian angel for all good witches (like the Halliwells). Good news? Not to Piper (Holly Marie Combs), who, in the process of Phoebe's discovery, loses another boyfriend. ~ All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Mark Anthony Galluzzo debuts with this gritty account of two poor boys in rural Florida whose lives are irreparably changed after witnessing a friend's thoughtless hunting death. For Sunny (Jeremy Sisto), life becomes meaningless, and he decides to take as much as he can from the world. The trauma causes Anthony (Eric Michael Cole), who has won a couple of high school writing awards, to re-evaluate his life and his future. Though his grades and his relationship with the middle class C.J. (Jaime Pressly) indicate that the future is bright, Anthony is painfully aware that he does not deserve his good fortune. Robert Englund, the inimitable "Freddy Krueger" of Nightmare on Elm Street fame, is cast to type in this Charmed episode as the demon Gamill. Choosing "Charmed One" Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) as his victim, Gamill shrinks the girl to the size of five inches, then uses her as bait to lure Piper (Holly Marie Combs) and Paige (Rose McGowan) into a trap. Ultimately, all three girls are magically miniaturized -- but is it possible that they can they use their diminished size to their advantage in vanquishing the malevolent Gamill? ~ All Movie Guide

In his latest effort to destroy the Charmed Ones, The Source of All Evil (Bennet Guillory) places Piper (Holly Marie Combs) in a coma. He then taps her brain, causing Piper to lose all sense of realistic perception. In this delusional state, Piper is more than willing to forsake her magical powers, leaving herself and her sisters completely vulnerable to The Source. It is up to Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Paige (Rose McGowan) to restore Piper's sense of reality -- without killing her in the process. ~ All Movie Guide
