In the first half of a two-part story, no sooner has George's father Harold O'Malley (Geoge Dzundza) nemerged from heart surgery than he must undergo another operation for cancer. Both Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) suffer mightily when Meredith's estranged father Thatcher Grey (Jeff Perry) arrives in town to visit his other daughter Molly and his new granddaughter. While still putting off cashing her huge inheritance check from Denny, Izzie (Katherine Heigl) bonds with Heather, a teenager with a bad attitude, a worse case of spinal curvature, and no money for additional surgery. Joe Bowers (Luke Wilson) is a soldier chosen to take part in a secret military scientific experiment in which he will be put into induced hibernation for one year, along with a woman named Rita (Maya Rudolph). Bowers is chosen for the assignment because he is statistically the most average man in the Army, while Rita is a hooker ordered to do some community service; however, Bowers and Rita are forgotten when the military base where the experiment took place is closed down, and when they wake up in the year 2505, Bowers finds himself living in a society where intelligence has taken such a landslide he's now the smartest man in the world. Can Bowers save America from its own remarkable stupidity, and he can he get the dunderheads around him to believe what he says? Produced under the title 3001, Idiocracy also stars Dax Shepard as Bowers's numb-skull lawyer, Stephen Root as a judge, and Terry Crews as Camacho, a former porn star and professional wrestler who is now president of the United States. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Debuting with two back-to-back episodes on March 8, 2006, the half-hour ABC sitcom Sons & Daughters was clearly influenced by Fox's Arrested Development in its depiction of a large, extended, and extremely dysfunctional American family. Series co-creator Fred Goss headed the cast as human-resources rep Cameron Walker, who lived with his second wife, Liz (Gillian Vigman), and their two children, eight-year-old Ezra (Noah Matthews) and four-year-old Marni (Lexi Gold Jourden). The "spoiler" in the Walker household was Henry Walker (Trevor Einhorn), Cameron's profoundly embittered 14-year-old son from his previous marriage to the bipolar Paige (Melinda Allen). Elsewhere, Cameron's sister, Sharon (Alison Quinn), was mired in a sexless marriage with Don Fenton (Jerry Lambert), an auto-parts salesman and frustrated actor. Sharon's stepsister, Jenna (Amanda Walsh), a single mom struggling to make ends meet as a waitress, seemed to have a gift for invariably choosing the proverbial wrong guy. Rounding out this family group were Cameron and Sharon's high-strung and highly judgmental parents, Colleen (Dee Wallace Stone) and Wendal (Max Gail), and their outspokenly anti-Semitic aunt Rae (Lois Hall). To maintain a semblance of spontaneity, each episode was only partially scripted, allowing the actors to ad-lib and improvise within the framework of the story (Fred Goss had previously employed this technique on his Bravo network series Significant Others). As Izzie (Katherine Heigl) busies herself preparing for a lavish Thanksgiving dinner, both Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) sneak back to the hospital. Upon arrival, Meredith helps Derek (Patrick Dempsey) look after a man who has awakened from a coma after sixteen years--only to determine that he would have been better off remaining asleep. Meanwhile, George (T.R. Knight) is strongarmed into joining his father and brothers on a turkey shoot, with disastrous results. And Bailey (Chandra Wilson) finally realizes that the "Nazi" everyone is always talking about is none other than herself.
