Gordo (Adam Lamberg) may have reached the age 14, but he feels like his fellow 14-year-olds are all "older" than he is. Interviewing his "mature" friends on the topic of manhood, Gordo comes to a momentous conclusion: he will never grow up until he agrees to go through his bar mitzvah, which he had studiously avoided the previous year. Director Anson Williams makes a cameo appearance in this, the final episode of Lizzie McGuire's first season. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Originally telecast by Disney Channel as a "sneak preview" (in an offbeat 7:40 p.m. time slot), this debut episode of Lizzie McGuire finds the eponymous heroine (Hilary Duff) trying -- and failing -- to make the Hillridge Middle School cheerleading squad. In an e-mail chat with her pal Miranda (Lalaine), Lizzie jealously suggests that her main rival, Kate (Ashlie Brillault), made the squad because she "enhances" her bra size. Unfortunately, Lizzie fails to press the "delete" button and her catty e-mail is posted throughout the Internet -- resulting in an angry confrontation between Kate and Lizzie, and a surprising act of self-sacrifice from Miranda. Meanwhile, Lizzie's parents (Robert Carradine, Hallie Todd) are the only ones present when their son Matt's (Jake Thomas) pet lizard dies. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Is it really happening or is it a horrible dream? That's what Lizzie (Hilary Duff) is asking herself when she tries to catch the attention of her dream boy, Ethan (Clayton Snyder) -- only to discover that Ethan would rather hang out with Lizzie's pesky kid brother, Matt (Jake Thomas). It all begins when Matt boards the wrong school bus, an event that sparks a bizarre chain of circumstances wherein the kid is mistaken as a child genius, a worldly bon vivant, and "the coolest kid in school"! Lizzie is so outraged that she actually calls the cops to "collect" her brother...with astonishing results. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Lizzie (Hilary Duff) tries to help lovestruck Miranda (Lalaine) make an impression on good-looking Ryan Adams (Shan Elliot). This situation leads (perhaps inevitably) to a replay of Cyrano de Bergerac, with Lizzie hiding in a trash can and "feeding" Miranda her dialogue as she converses with Ryan. The strategy backfires when Ryan thinks that it is Lizzie who is stuck on him -- and also when Gordo (Adam Lamberg) gets tired of being left out of things. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The "athletically challenged" Gordo (Adam Lamberg) is nervous about going bowling with Lizzie (Hilary Duff), Miranda, (Lalaine) and Ethan (Clayton Snyder). To build Gordo's confidence, Miranda offers to be Gordo's "life coach." At the same time, Lizzie may not be able to keep her bowling date with handsome Ethan thanks to (of all people!) her dad, Sam (Robert Carradine). And as for Lizzie's brother, Matt (Jake Thomas), he and his pal Lanny (Christian Copelin) are plotting a fiendish plan for dealing with school bully Heywood (Paul Robert Langdon). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Gordo (Adam Lamberg) breaks a movie date with Lizzie (Hilary Duff) and Miranda (Lalaine), but neglects to inform them that he is going out with attractive Brooke Baker (Kyla Pratt). When the girls find out, they can't understand why Gordo is lying about his "relationship" with Brooke. To get to the truth of the matter, Lizzie disguises herself as a boy and starts trailing Gordo everywhere -- and nearly breaks up a beautiful friendship in the process. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Stuck in detention with her hard-boiled tormentor, Angel Lieberman (Jackie Angelescu), Lizzie (Hilary Duff) is pleasantly surprised when she and Angel become good pals. But on the unpleasant side, impressionable Lizzie begins adopting Angel's "punk" clothing and attitude. It is up to Miranda (Lalaine) and Gordo (Adam Lamberg) to save Lizzie from herself by hastily preparing the cautionary video "Before They Were Bad Girls." And back at the McGuire home, Matt (Jake Thomas) insists that his regular bedtime be abolished -- with surprising results. Highlights include a reference to a certain very famous scene from the movie Risky Business. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Faced with such class-president candidates as annoyingly perky cheerleader Claire Miller (Davida Williams) and resident weirdo Larry Tudgeman (Kyle J. Downes), Lizzie (Hilary Duff) figures she can win the election in a landslide by running on the "Normal" ticket. Unfortunately, self-appointed campaign manager Gordo (Adam Lamberg) advises Lizzie to be all things to all people -- and as a result, Lizzie drops normality, stops being "herself" and develops a swelled head the size of Texas. Meanwhile, Lizzie's brother, Matt (Jake Thomas), has apparently adopted an imaginary friend named Jasper. Pop-culture references in this episode include nods to Britney Spears and Marilyn Manson -- and even Revenge of the Nerds, which, of course, featured Lizzie McGuire co-star Robert Carradine. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Throughout her life, young gymnast Andie Burton (Amy Jo Johnson) has dreamed of going to the Olympics, and there isn't anything she wouldn't do to achieve that goal -- even if it means wreaking havoc upon her health. Reprimanded by her coach for being on the "heavy" side, Andie goes to great lengths to lose weight. Finally, her teammate Leslie (Tara Boger) clues Andie in on a surefire method to drop pounds: eat all you want, then purge yourself. As a result, Andie develops a serious eating disorder, fluctuating wildly between anorexia and bulimia -- and there seems to be no way to reverse the damage, nor halt the pressures brought to bear by those supposedly looking out for her best interests. Real-life gymnast Cathy Rigby makes a brief appearance in this cautionary TV movie, which first aired September 8, 1997, on NBC. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
