Two young immigrants find themselves torn violently between traditional ways and the strong desire for independence, in director Vipul Amrutlal Shah's romantic drama Namastey, London. Jasmeet 'Jazz' Singh is an attractive Indian girl living and working in London; she has earned the disdain of her parents by rejecting her cultural heritage and the traditionally-accepted "arranged marriage" of her family's culture. Meanwhile, Jazz's best friend, the Pakistani immigrant Imran Khan (Upen Patel) is kicked out of the house by his parents when he informs them of his decision to move in with a Caucasian girlfriend. Jazz's father grows so desperate to force her into planned nuptials that he carts her off to India, where her path crosses with that of Arjun (Akshay Kumar), a local farmer instantly desperate to marry her. Jazz concocts a clever means of dodging this proposition, but the smitten Arjun refuses to take no for an answer, and follows Jazz back to London. Director Raj Kanwar explores the possibility that some marriages are better made in heaven than arranged on Earth with this romance detailing the warm bond shared between a good-natured automotive engineer sent to Canada for training, and a lonely woman set to be married to a wealthy but emotionally distant business tycoon. After a chance meeting in an elevator finds engaged engineer Aditya (Akshay Kumar) suddenly smitten with shy and spoken-for Jia (Katrina Kaif), a series of repeated encounters throughout the city soon lead Adi to believe that perhaps destiny has played no small role in bringing the pair together. A simple girl from a prosperous family, Jia longs for the friendship and affection not afforded to her in either her family relationships or her relationship with her tightly-wound husband-to-be. As the pair grows ever closer and Jia's appreciation for Adi's gentle humor, thoughtful nature, and accepting sister and brother-in-law grows, her definition of "family" begins to take on an entirely new perspective. The story involves a group of fashion models who decide to take on the criminal underworld in a fight to acquire stolen diamonds. Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, and Gulshan Grover play the gangsters. Bo Derek appears in a scene reminiscent of her work in 10 (1979).
