A boy edging into his teenage years struggles to find his muse and himself in this gentle drama from Greece. Hristos (Vladimir Golosinski) is a 12-year-old growing up on a small island not far from Rhodes; his parents are divorced, and his mother (Elissavet Naslidou) doesn't have much time for him, displaying little interest in his passion for music. One of the few people Hristos can confide in is an elderly lighthouse keeper (Alekos Alexandrakis), who lets the boy practice his violin near the water, where he discovers he likes the sound of the instrument melding with the noises of the sea. Hristos is also suffering from a rare disease that is slowly robbing him of his sight, making his music seem all the more important as a way of perceiving the world around him. When a new teacher, Maria (Viki Volioti), arrives at his school, Hristos seems to have finally found someone who understands what his gift means to him and encourages him to follow a creative path. To Fos Pou Svini was the first feature from director Vasilis Douros. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

After his successful documentary Ram (1989), it took director Menelaos Karamaghiolis a decade to jump to feature films with Black Out, a youth-oriented psychological thriller and a love story. An Air Force pilot is declared missing over the Aegean Sea, but his girlfriend keeps getting mysterious recordings of his voice describing their stormy love affair. The rest of the plot is very much like Othello, Diego appearing in the form of an ex-boyfriend who drops the acid of jealousy into the unsuspecting pilot's ear and convinces him to disappear to test the fidelity of his love. If one cannot trust friends, who can one trust? The film uses black and white for the present, color for frequent flashbacks. Hanna Schygulla makes an appearance in the film. The film won the Third Prize for fiction, "Best Debut-Film Director", "Best Leading Actress," and "Best Editing" awards of the State Film Awards presented following the Thessaloniki Film Festival, 1998. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

Christos (Akis Kourkoulos) is an inordinately handsome lad and thinks he'd like to give show business a try. He's none too garrulous, but its clear that he's quite happy to be away from his clinging girlfriend. When an attempt to audition for a club owner leaves him humiliated and with an empty pocketbook, he gets a job working in a butcher's shop. Evidently, he doesn't have the thick skin needed to become a performer. He is a hard worker, however, and learns fast. This pleases shop-owner Michalis, whose son has abandoned any pretense of interest in his father's business, which is growing enough to warrant expanding. Meanwhile, Christos, who is becoming increasingly involved in learning the business, also has a liaison with Michalis' daughter Fani. The son, meanwhile, has gotten himself arrested on a drug charge, which makes the papers. When Michalis reads the paper and learns about the arrest, he suffers a heart attack and dies. Christos is very capable and manages to keep both the businesses afloat, becoming close with Michalis' wife in the process. However, there's a major wrinkle in the works which will come from his insanely jealous ex-girlfriend. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This is a beguiling story about a lovely fairy, her sister-fairies, and the adventures of a young boy whose heart belongs to these winged creatures. The "Enchantress" is said to appear regularly at a nearby spring, and only at night. After the young boy sees her and is captivated, he gets permission from his father to leave home and sets forth to explore haunted castles and find multiple treasures, assisted by the fairies who know about these things. The young boy returns home and even after he grows up and marries, he does not lose interest in looking for the Enchantress one more time. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
