And Suddenly It's Murder! is a regulation Dino De Laurentiis concoction: Big stars, lavish production values, muddleheaded plot. Three Italian couples go on separate vacations to Monte Carlo. When they open their suitcases, a body tumbles out of one of the grips. The rest of the film is a macabre variation of La Ronde, with the body being transferred from room to room and the innocent being implicated along with the guilty. Among the discomfited tourists are Alberto Sordi, Vittorio Gassman, and Silvana Mangano. Originally released in Italy in 1959 as Crimen, And Suddenly It's Murder! didn't make it to the States until 1964; some English-language prints bear the title Criminals. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Four different takes on the meaning of love comprise this Italian anthology. "Love and Language," the first tale, centers on the difficulties of a Sicilian immigrant who is unable to master proper Italian. the second tale "Love and Life" centers on a jealous and unhappy wife who becomes so desperate to be free of her constantly philandering husband she takes on a lover of her own. When that doesn't work, she hires a gorgeous maid in hopes of finally getting proof that he is cheating. Unfortunately, things don't turn out quite the way she'd planned. In the third episode, "Love and Art" a nearly exhausted screenwriter hires a secretary to help manage his typing. She's a pretty lass and this makes his insecure wife crazy until he fires the female and hires a male secretary. Unfortunately, he too wants to write for the movies and soon begins making significant improvement to his boss's work making him a big success. The first screenwriter is so happy about this that he doesn't mind when his secretary begins having an affair with his wife. "Love and Death," the final episode centers on the love affair between a middle-aged widower and the grieving young widow he meets at the cemetery. Geremia is a smuggler who sneaks cigarettes and chocolate across the border between Switzerland and Italy. His brother-in-law Augusto, a municipal guard, draws him into a plot to smuggle a person across the border, but their efforts collapse when the illegal immigrant is caught and falls to his death in a ravine. Geremia and Augusto discover that the dead man was also transporting two billion lire in his suitcases, which he was supposed to deposit in a Swiss bank. The two men decide to keep the loot, and so its true owners in Switzerland must connive to get it back from them. They succeed in duping Augusto, but the clever Geremia is able to hold onto the money and safely escape with it into Switzerland. ~ Nicole Gagne, All Movie Guide

Released in the US by 20th Century-Fox, Boccaccio '70 is a compendium of short subjects directed by three of Italy's top filmmakers. Each story is written in the style of the famed Italian essayist Boccaccio, albeit told in contemporary terms. First up is "The Raffle", written by Cesare Zavattini and directed by Vittorio De Sica: Sophia Loren (wife of Boccaccio '70 producer Carlo Ponti) plays the sexy operator of a shooting gallery, who offers herself as first prize to the best shot. In "The Job", written by Suso Cecchi D'Amico and directed by Luchino Visconti, Romy Schneider carries a torch for her philandering boss Tomas Milian. The final segment is "The Temptation of Dr. Antonio", directed by Federico Fellini and scripted by Fellini, Ennio Flaiano and Tullio Pinelli; in this one, Anita Ekberg is an image on a poster who comes to life for the benefit of a drooling middle-aged professor (Peppino De Filippo). A fourth episode, "Renzo and Luciana", directed by Mario Monicelli, was cut from U.S. release. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this musical adaptation of the Cinderella story geared toward teen audiences, Cindy (Bonnie Bianco) lives with her father, stepmother, and two half-sisters in Brooklyn. The shrewish stepmom hates Cindy and is taking off for Rome to get her daughters trained in classical music. Completely against her wishes, she has to take Cindy along because her husband insists. Once in Rome, Cindy's great voice comes into its own when she sings for a band run by a prince (who has kept his true identity to himself). Everyone is invited to the prince's family mansion for a party, and when Cindy goes -- thanks to being outfitted by a friendly astrologer -- she is furious when she discovers the prince's real identity and throws her shoe at him in a fit of temper. The oddly featured poet Cyrano De Bergerac(Jose Ferrer, reprising an Oscar-winning role in Michael Gordon's Cyrano De Bergerac), he of the enormous nose, and musketeer D'Artagnan (Jean-Pierre Cassel) lend a hand to put down a revolution in 17th-century Paris. While they bravely fight for the monarchy, the men dally with two comely courtesans (Sylva Koscina and Daliah Lavi). Though paired off with satisfactory partners, the couples find that a switcheroo might afford them each true love. Director Abel Gance and Nelly Kaplan wrote the screenplay, which united period characters Cyrano, from Edmond Rostand's play, and D'Artagnan, from Alexandre Dumas' Three Musketeers, in this romantic swashbuckler. Though French cinema pioneer Gance was near the end of his career, Kaplan was just beginning. She would go on to write, edit and direct several more films. ~ Kristie Hassen, All Movie Guide

In this romantic comedy, a ship load of the rich and horny embark on a cruise aboard a millionaire's yacht. Included in the guest roster are a French businessman, his singing wife, his mistress, his wife's lover, a count whom the businessman hired to sleep with his wife so he can get a divorce, the boat owner's lover and his son, a lovely model hired by the owner to seduce his son who seems alarmingly disinterested in women, and a photographer to record it all.
