Set in five neighborhoods of Los Angeles, director Christopher Landon's ensemble comedy drama Burning Palms follows a small group of protagonists as they shatter taboos and strive for success. When a lonely woman meets a handsome single father (Dylan McDermott), she thinks she's found the perfect mate. She begins to have second thoughts, however, upon witnessing his unusual interactions with his overly flirtatious adolescent daughter (Emily Meade). Meanwhile, a woman (Jamie Chung) seeking to please her sexually deviant boyfriend finds that the price of submission may be more than she's willing to pay, and a gay couple (Peter Macdissi and Anson Mount) begin to have second thoughts about adoption after welcoming an African child into their home. Things only get more absurd when a depressed woman (Zoe Saldana) makes a bizarre proposal to a man (Nick Stahl) who recently attacked her, and a mischievous boy engages his brothers in a series of increasingly twisted challenges. A thesp-turned-crook gets a chance at career in movies as well as crime scene investigation in this offbeat action comedy with nods to Raymond Chandler. Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) is a struggling New York actor who high-tails it to Los Angeles. Once there, Lockhart winds up at the posh home of the aptly named homosexual private eye Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) amid a lavish Hollywood party, hoping to score a life-changing role in a Hollywood feature. Harry becomes reacquainted with Harmony (Michelle Monaghan), a girl he had a major crush on in his small-town Indiana high school, who may be a bit more interested in him now than she was years ago. He takes both her and her girlfriend home with him, but -- in a moment of drunken stupor -- accidentally sleeps with the wrong woman. Meanwhile, when a series of female bodies turns up across L.A., Harry slowly breaks into detective work, mentored by Perry. The biggest twist? Shane Black riffs Adaptation and other films by having Harry (via satirical narration) write the movie while he is living it. Harry assures the audience that unlike Lord of the Rings, this one won't have 17 endings. Four men just barely on the right side of the law step into a web of danger and corruption in this drama. In the early 1950s, Max Hoover (Nick Nolte) is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department who leads what's been dubbed "the hat squad," a group of sharp-dressed cops who are ordered to stamp out organized crime using any means necessary, with legality and delicacy not much of an issue. Hoover and his partners Ellery Coolidge (Chazz Palminteri), Eddie Hall (Michael Madsen), and Arthur Relyea (Chris Penn) are looking into the brutal murder of a young woman named Allison Pond (Jennifer Connelly). In the course of their investigation, they discover that Allison had a lively sexual history, and she possessed explicit films of herself with her lovers, including Gen. Thomas Timms (John Malkovich), leader of the newly-formed Atomic Energy Commission. Timms becomes a key suspect, and he reveals the first of a long trail of troubling secrets, but Hoover has secrets of his own that he's trying to keep covered in the process -- including the fact that he and Allison were once an item.
